Item Description: Reprint Society, London, 1953. Hardcover. First illustrated edition. Blue-green cloth stamped in silver with red spine panel, illustrated endpapers. Red top page edges sunned to pink; minor foxing to endpapers; light shelf rubbing to lower edges of covers; VG clean copy otherwise, no owner names. The thin yellow jacket has short tears and small chips to edges of panels; spine lightly darkened, with moderatre rubbing to spine folds, chips to spine ends with loss of part of the publisher's imprint at foot of spine; in all just good, but still respectable in appearance, none of the illustration or lettering lost. >>The correct first illustrated edition, with excellent woodcuts and line drawings by C.F. Tunnicliffe and Raymond Sheppard, who had been commissioned by Cape to do alternate sets of illustrations, but who both did such a nice job that both sets were used. For some reason, Cape did not publish its illustrated edition until 1955, and Scribner's issued their edition with these illustrations in 1960. A very handsome edition and a more affordable, and physically attractive, alternative to the 1952 New York first printing. Bookseller Inventory # 43357

Hemingway’s Nobel Prize winning novel and one of the most perfect works penned in the 20th century. Eric Linklater for the Broadsheet states, "Hemingway has written nothing so beautiful as this brief tale, and nowhere, I think has his vision of heroic scars of live been so surely realized. It is a little book in space but read it three times and it grows in the mind like an old story of one’s childhood: so certain it is, so satisfying are its pains and valiancy.".
