Red top page edges sunned to pink; minor foxing to endpapers; light shelf rubbing to lower edges of covers; VG clean copy otherwise, no owner names. The thin yellow jacket has short tears and small chips to edges of panels; spine lightly darkened, with moderatre rubbing to spine folds, chips to spine ends with loss of part of the publisher's imprint at foot of spine; in all just good, but still respectable in appearance, none of the illustration or lettering lost. >>The correct first illustrated edition, with excellent woodcuts and line drawings by C.F. Tunnicliffe and Raymond Sheppard, who had been commissioned by Cape to do alternate sets of illustrations, but who both did such a nice job that both sets were used. For some reason, Cape did not publish its illustrated edition until 1955, and Scribner's issued their edition with these illustrations in 1960. A very handsome edition and a more affordable, and physically attractive, alternative to the 1952 New York first printing. Bookseller Inventory # 43357

Item Description: Jonathan Cape, London, 1955. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. C.F. Tunnicliffe & Raymond Sheppard (illustrator). 1st Edition. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. London. Jonathan Cape 1955. Jonathan Cape's 1st ILLUSTRATED edition, first printing. This edition precedes the US illustrated edition by 5 years (1960). Preceded by a bookclub copy. DJ price intact on flap 10s.6d.net. Interesting story of how the edition came about as two separate artists were commissioned to illustrate the text for Life Magazine. This edition combines both here and you can see the different interpretations of each artist alongside Hemingway's classic story. 34 woodcut illustrations on fine smooth, heavy stock paper with incredible illustrations by C.F. Tunnicliffe & Raymond Sheppard. Book would grade fine if not for slightest (barely) edge toning and 3 tiny specks to rear panel. DJ not as crisp and clean as the book but not too far off. Some edge toning to DJ edge with light soiling on rear with light chipping at crown of DJ and upper rear corner. Slightest sunning to red title on DJ backstrip. A very nice tight and clean copy. no writing within. Bright black topstain. A near fine copy in a VG-VG+ DJ. Bookseller Inventory # 000683
