193 x 133 mm. (7 5/8 x 5 1/4"). xvi, 748 pp.; vii, [1], 786 pp. Two volumes bound in one. PRETTY CONTEMPORARY TAN CRUSHED MOROCCO, INLAID AND GILT (said in two early pencilled notes to be by Birdsall), upper cover with two haughty peacocks inlaid in turquoise, green, and purple morocco, their features and feathers detailed in gilt, inlaid light brown morocco panel above the birds lettered in gilt, smooth pine with a single similarly inlaid peacock, inlaid light brown morocco title label, gilt-ruled turn-ins with anthemium cornerpieces, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Engraved frontispiece portrait to each volume, with tissue guard. Front pastedown with bookplate of Charles Cobb Walker; title page of first work with embossed stamp of New England Conservatory of Music (impression causing two small holes to paper). â Spine gently and evenly sunned, gutter open at front flyleaf, a hint of browning just to edges of leaves, half title of second work with one-inch closed tear at head, but still a nearly fine copy, clean and fresh internally, and in an unworn binding. This is a very attractively bound collection of verse by one of the few Victorian poets to be held in high esteem by modern readers. Though he was overshadowed in his day by Tennyson and by his own wife, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning has experienced a much more lasting influence stylistically than either. As Day says, "Intellectuals have consistently praised Browning . . . for his psychological portraits and his poetic style. Browning could write mellifluous verse like Tennyson's and Swinburne's, but he much preferred either a conversational quality catching the idiom and cadence of actual speech or a cerebral diction challenging the brain power of his readers." This edition is printed on India paper, allowing the reader to possess a great deal of the poet's work in a very manageable volume. The binding is unsigned, but it displays wit and elegance in design as well as excellence in execution. As the pencilled notes at the front suggest, it could have been done by Birdsall, and this possibility is at least plausible (without being probable), given that Birdsall produced a wide range of designs and has no special "look" in the way that Bedford or Zaehnsdorf or Riviere might be said to have. The Birdsall story, relevant or not, began in 1792, when William Birdsall acquired the Northampton bindery of John Lacy and established a highly respected family operation that continued for more than 150 years, the firm finally closing in 1961. In the foremost group of English provincial binderies, the Birdsall firm consistently executed bindings with considerable skill, and their work was often animated, imaginative, and even experimental in design. Our volume's former owner Charles Cobb Walker (1871-1950) was the son of a wealthy stockbroker who made his home in the Gilded Age resort town of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, where his neighbors included Longfellow's son, painter Ernest Longfellow. He often patronizes several American binderies, including that of Grabau in Boston. Walker bequeathed his library to the New England Conservatory of Music.

Stanley Baldwin", vols 3 and 17 have pencil inscriptions "Louisa Baldwin from S.B." and all the volumes have the large bookplate of Louisa Baldwin designed by M.D. Johnston and dated 1922. Stanley Baldwin (1867-1947) served three times as British Prime Minister, in 1923-24, 1924-29 and 1935-37. He was the only child of Alfred and Louisa Baldwin, who married in 1866. Louisa (1845-1925) was the youngest of the four remarkable Macdonald sisters. Alice (1837-1910) was the mother of Rudyard Kipling, Georgina (1840-1920) married the painter Sir Edward Burne-Jones and Agnes (1843-1906) married the painter Sir Edward Poynter. Alfred Baldwin was a successful Worcestershire ironmaker and the couple lived at Wilden House, near to the works. Louisa suffered from poor health but read widely and wrote four novels, along with poetry and collections of stories. She encouraged her son's love of literature, although he failed to shine at Harrow, or Trinity College, Cambridge, from where he graduated with a third in 1888. He returned home to work in the family firm and became Managing Director in 1902. He inherited almost £200,000 on his father's death in 1908, and remained engaged in business until appointed to his first ministerial office in 1917.

In very good condition. Robert Browning was an English poet and playwright whose dramatic monologues put him high among the Victorian poets. He was noted for irony, characterization, dark humor, social commentary, historical settings and challenging vocabulary and syntax. His career began well â " the long poems Pauline (1833) and Paracelsus (1835) were acclaimed â " but his reputation fell back for a time â " his 1840 poem Sordello was seen as wilfully obscure â " and took over a decade to recover, by which time he had moved from Shelleyan forms to a more personal style. In 1846 Browning married fellow poet Elizabeth Barrett and moved to Italy. By her death in 1861 he had published the collection Men and Women (1855). His Dramatis Personae (1864) and book-length epic poem The Ring and the Book made him a leading poet.
