Lynn. 17.8 x 11cm. 224 pages. Content: They are the same age, look alike, in fact the only main difference one is a child of the London slums, the other heir to the throne of England. Book Description: Boston: James R. Osgood, 1882. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First American edition, with corrected text in second state binding. Bound in publisher's green cloth, lettering and illustrations stamped in gilt, ruling and decorations stamped in black. A very good copy, with wear to the extremities, light rubbing to the rear panel, bright gilt, spine starting inside the rear cover, otherwise sturdy and intact spine, former owner's bookplate to the front free endpaper, otherwise bright and clean interior. Overall, a bright and attractive copy. BAL 3402. The Prince and the Pauper is Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. Specifically, this novel, set in the 16th century, tells the story a young Prince Edward VI of England and a peasant boy named Tom Canty. After a chance meeting, the two boys decide to switch places and experience how the other half lives. Although the story is fiction, The Prince and the Pauper is decisively plausible; as Twain explains, "It may have happened, it may not have happened: but it could have happened." This first American edition was published shortly after the London and Montreal first editions. Bookseller Inventory # MT057

First American Edition of Twain's historical tale for the young (though really for adults as well). (Also, the copyright page bears the primary Franklin Press imprint, but this is true of just about all copies.) The binding is in the second state, with two blank leaves at the rear and with the top central spine ¿W¿ rosette a scant one-sixteenth inch below the decorative fillet. Condition is near-fine, still quite bright, with very minor wear at the spine ends (and one fore-corner has a bump). McBride pp 70-72; Blanck 3402. Bookseller Inventory # 13042402
