Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 – 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "the Great American Novel". Green cloth with gilt lettering and decoration front and spine, black stamped decorations front and spine. 192 illustrations. 411 pages. Later issue, with Franklin Press imprint but textual corrections on pages 124, 263 and 362. ("Later" might have been a few days; there seems to be considerable confusion about the first five printings as to chronology and timing, all within a year or so.) The covers are worn at corners and spine-ends, with slight loss of cloth. Scuffs and specks. The endpapers and edges are heavily foxed, but the rest of the pages are not foxed. Name in ink on front endpaper. There is a crack at the manuscript page, showing the threads, otherwise the book is sound, with tight hinges and pages. Overall, a very decent example, with bright gilt both front and spine. Bookseller Inventory # 001257

Item Description: James R. Osgood and Company, Boston, 1882. Half Leather. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾", up to 9¾" tall. 192 illustrations. Half leather over marbled boards, with full marbled text block, marbled endpapers, five raised bands on the spine, red leather backstrip with title, black leather backstrip with author, and gilt detailing between the raised bands. First edition/second state text, but with Frank Press imprint and preferred deluxe half calf binding. Leather and boards are rubbed and significantly chipped at their edges, leather is chipped 1/16" at the tail of the spine, rear board has a 1/4" x 1/4" chip to the marbled paper and several closed tears to the paper which appear to have been repaired. Spine remains attractive with bright gilt. Backstrips are slightly rubbed, with very slight surface cracking. Hinge is cracked between two front and rear flyleaves, but the boards are securely attached by the crash cloth. Front free endpaper is torn about 2" where it meets the binding; rear free endpaper is torn about 1.5". Light chipping to the fore-edge of the ffe. Slight, occasional foxing and soiling throughout, but overall the interior is clean and bright, with no markings. Binding is square. Overall, this copy is in only good condition, but it remains an attractive addition to any shelf. We are happy to take photos upon request. Bookseller Inventory # L1062

Item Description: Boston J. R. Osgood and Co 1882, 1882. First American edition, first printing, with "Franklin Press" on the copyright page. With 192 illustrations. Square 8vo, publisher’s original sheep binding, a deluxe binding offered by the publisher, one of a small number, now quite scarce. 411 pp. A handsome copy, the sheep in quite good condition with some typical rubbing and an antique strengthening to the hinges. All in all, a quite collectible copy with some of the age evidence one would expect with all of the sheep bindings. THE RARE FIRST ISSUE, FIRST STATE IN ONE OF THE MOST ELUSIVE BINDING STATES. Twain's timeless tale of two little boys who switch places to see how the other half lives. This is the scarcest and most expensive binding offered by the publishers and is very elusive in the marketplace. THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER was quite unlike anything Twain had done up till that time. It is a fine adventure with a delicate vein of "Twainian" humor running throughout. Twain took up a short domicile in Montreal in an attempt to establish residency there so that he could register the copy-right in Canada, England and the United States. His past encounters with piracy led him to make this attempt. Bookseller Inventory # 22775
