Item Description: George D. Sproul (SIGNED), (Cambridge, MA), 1901. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Saint Dunstan Edition. LIMITED EDITION OF 30 COPIES ON VELLUM--18 for sale in the United States and 12 in Europe--SIGNED BY THE PUBLISHER GEORGE D. SPROUL AND ILLUMINATOR, A. Formilli. THIS IS COPY No. 14 for S. Jennie Sorg. Large illuminated initial and design on title page and first page. Each of the 100 additional stanzas (101 stanzas in total--on 51 vellum leaves, printed recto only) have colored illuminated initials and floral designs. Signed Original binding by Trautz-Bauzonnet. Covers of full green levant morocco leather with wide borders on both covers, richly gilt with flowers and vines. Minimal edge rubbing. Each cover has an inlay of white morocco in its center with pink flowers and green stem. Doublures of green morocco with a continuation of the flower and vine motif from the covers and pink roses in each corner. The centers of the paste downs are white morocco with a central round medallion of a painted rose. The spine is in six compartments with gilt lettering and ornamental vine design. All edges gilt. Some loss of gilt to "R" on title page. All other gilt fine. Mild foxing front preliminary pages, not stanza pages. With the discreet small round leather, gilt lettered bookplate of noted bibliophile and binding collector, Paul Edward Chevalier. Housed in a custom green cloth covered slipcase with gilt lettered leather label on spine. 4to. The Dunstan Edition is both one of the Rarest and most beautiful Rubaiyats ever produced. Potter's 1929 catalogue confirms that no future edition will be issued with the type having been distributed. In addition, no two volumes are exactly alike. Different illuminators and designs being used. That entry also states that the volume, while complete in itself, was part of a set of 12 volumes of the Saint Dunstan Edition issued to subscribers "at 12,000 dollars per set, of which 22 sets only were disposed of". (Potter Bibliography of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Together with Kindred Matter in Prose and Verse Pertaining thereto" [1929]). The Noted sale of the Howard T. Goodwin Library in 1903 included a copy. Indeed the cover is illustrated in the catalogue. The J. B. Learmont Library sale of March 1917, likewise included a copy of this edition. OCLC reports three copies in institutions--Ransome Collection, Washington U. St. Louis and Syracuse University. If Potter's statement that only 22 copies were sold is accurate, then that leaves maximally only 19 potential copies available. A centerpiece of a Rubaiyat Collection and a tour de force of twentieth century illumination and fine binding. Bookseller Inventory # 48269

Item Description: Riviere, London, 1928. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very good. Gilbert James (illustrator). 8vo. Translated by Edward Fitzgerald. Illustrated by Gilbert James with twelve illustrations; eleven are in black and white, but the frontispiece is beautifully hand-colored for this edition. Printed on Studio hand-made paper. Beautifully hand bound by Riviere in full pumpkin-colored calf; spine in 6 compartments with raised bands, ornately gilt. The compartments, except for the title, are tooled with a serpent and chalice, gilt. The upper board features a vignette of a large gilt chalice with a serpent in leather onlay, underlying buff with green accents for the scales. Gilt rule borders and corner circles are tooled onto the upper and lower boards. All edges gilt. Marbled paper endpapers with gilt inner dentelles of grapes and grape leaves. There is wear to the spine tips and to a part of the rear board edge; neat, artful and nearly invisible repair of the joints; some darkening to the leather else this is a very good copy in a skillfully executed binding. Item Description: A. Wessels Company, 1899. Book Condition: Used: Very Good. No Jacket. Reprint Edition. 5 5/8 X 8 1/4. REPRINT EDITION 1908, A. Wessels Company (MCMVIII). VERY GOOD CONDITION/ NO DUST JACKET IS INCLUDED.The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam of Naishapur. A Reprint of the Fourth English Translation By Edward Fitgerald, Together With a Life of Omar and Two Addresses By the Hon. John Hay and the Hon. Herbert Henry Asquith at the Omar Khayyam Club of either London or New York. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS: "JOHN MILTON HAY (October 8, 1838 - July 1, 1905) was an American statesman, diplomat, author, journalist, and private secretary and assistant to Abraham Lincoln. Hay's highest office was serving as United States Secretary of State under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt." "HERBERT HENRY ASQUITH, 1ST EARL OF OXFORD AND ASQUITH, KG, PC, KC (12 September 1852 - 15 February 1928) served as the Liberal Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916. He was the longest continuously serving Prime Minister in the 20th century until 5 January 1988. As Prime Minister, he led his Liberal party to a series of domestic reforms, including social insurance and the reduction of the power of the House of Lords. He led the nation into the First World War, but a series of military and political crises led to his replacement in late 1916 by David Lloyd George. His falling out with Lloyd George played a major part in the downfall of the Liberal Party. Before his term as Prime Minister he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1905-08) and as Home Secretary (1892-95). He was known as H. H. Asquith until his elevation to the peerage, when he became Lord Oxford. Asquith's achievements in peacetime have been overshadowed by his weaknesses in wartime. Many historians portray a vacillating Prime Minister, unable to present the necessary image of action and dynamism to the public. Others stress his continued high administrative ability. The dominant historical verdict is that there were two Asquiths: the urbane and conciliatory Asquith, who was a successful peacetime leader, and the hesitant and increasingly exhausted Asquith, who practised the politics of muddle and delay during the Great War." QUITE RARE. Will ship from United States. NO. Bookseller Inventory # 7128
