the silverado squatters, stevenson
Book Description: London: Chatto & Windus, 1883., 1883. 8vo., (7 4/8 x 5 inches). 32-page publishers catalogue dated October 1883 at end. Sepia frontispiece. Original sage-green cloth decorated and lettered in sepia and gold; preserved in a green morocco backed slipcase and chemise. Provenance: with the bookplate of James S. Copley on the front paste-down of each volume, his sale, Sothebys New York "Magnificent American, Historical Documents", 10th May 2011, lot 1059. First edition, first issue, with the word "His" omitted on next to last line of page 140. Stevenson rashly emigrated to America to be reunited with his lover Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne in August of 1879. "For the sake of economy and to collect material for a book he sailed from Glasgow to New York by the emigrant ship "Devonia", describing his experiences in "The Amateur Emigrant", part 1 (abridged, 1895; unabridged, 1966). He made a nightmare journey by emigrant train across America to San Francisco and then down the coast to Monterey, where Fanny was living with her children; it is described in part 2 (published in "Across the Plains", 1892). The hardships of the journey and the poverty that he endured wrecked Stevenson's health, and he was ill for much of the time. He broke down completely in March 1880 and came very near death, having the first of the haemorrhages from the lung that plagued the rest of his life. Fanny, who had obtained a divorce from Osbourne in December, took him into her home and nursed him devotedly. Stevenson and Fanny were married in San Francisco on 19 May 1880. They spent their honeymoon in an abandoned mining camp on the slopes of Mount St Helena, overlooking the Napa valley, experiences later described [as here] in "The Silverado Squatters" (1884)" (Ernest Mehew for DNB). The Silverado Squatters
Book Description: Chatto & Windus, London, 1883. First edition, first issue (with the word "His" omitted on the next to last line of page 140, and with the publisher's ads at the rear, dated "October"). Small octavo. Pp. [6], 254, [2], 32(ads). Frontispiece by Joseph Strong. Original sage green pictorial cloth stamped in brown and gilt, gilt-lettering to spine. Bookplate. Two corners slightly jammed. Extremities rubbed, primarily at spine ends and joints. A very good, tight copy. Stevenson's famous work on his stay at Napa, California including a chapter on Napa Wine. "Fourteen delightful essays resulting from the author's dwelling high on the side of Mt. St. Helena by the entrance to an abandoned silver mine. It contains one of the author's finest sketches, many times reprinted, The Sea Fogs" (Zamorano Eighty). As is well known, a smitten Robert Louis Stevenson came to California in poor health to pursue Fanny Van de Grift Osborne, a married woman. She obtained a divorce and the two married in May, 1880. To restore his health and escape the fogs of San Francisco Bay, the couple, along with Fanny's twelve-year-old son, Samuel Lloyd Osborne, honeymooned at the abandoned cabin of a silver mine on the shoulder of Mt. St. Helena. During the warm months of June and July, the honeymooners absorbed the charm of this bucolic and picturesque setting. Silverado Squatters provides a charming and endearing picture of life in the shadow of Mt. St. Helena and marks an important turning point in Stevenson's career. "As a writer, this summer at Silverado he left behind his fumbling youth. Silverado was the retreat that healed his soul and gave him back to the world" (Ann Roller Issler).
