Khazaria was finally wiped out by the forces of Genghis Khan, but evidence indicates that the Khazars themselves migrated to Poland and formed the cradle of Western Jewry. To the general reader the Khazars, who flourished from the seventh to the eleventh century, may seem infinitely remote today. Yet they have a close and unexpected bearing on our world which emerges as Mr. Koestler recounts the fascinating history of the ancient Khazar Empire, a major but almost forgotten power in Eastern Europe at about the time that Charlemagne was Emperor in the West. The Khazars' sway extended from the Black Sea to the Caspian, from the Caucasus to the Volga, and they were instrumental in stopping the Muslim onslaught against Byzantium, the eastern jaw of the gigantic pincer movement that in the West swept across northern Africa and into Spain. Thereafter the Khazars found themselves in a precarious position between the two major world powers: the Eastern Roman Empire in Byzantium and the triumphant followers of Mohammed. As Mr. Koestler points out, the Khazars were the Third World of their day, and they chose a surprising method of resisting both the Western pressure to become Christian and the Eastern to adopt Islam. Rejecting both, they converted to Judaism. In the second part of this book, "The Heritage", Mr. Koestler speculates about the ultimate faith of the Khazars and their impact on the racial composition and social heritage of modern Jewry. He produces a large body of meticulously detailed research in support of a theory that sounds all the more convincing for the restraint with which it is advanced. Yet should this theory be confirmed, the term "anti~Semitism" would become void of meaning, since, as Mr. Koestler writes, it is based "on a misapprehension shared by both the killers and their victims. The story of the Khazar Empire, as it slowly emerges from the past, begins to look like the most cruel hoax which history has ever perpetrated". Bookseller Inventory # 7151201

Item Description: Ishi Press, United States, 2013. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 216 x 140 mm. Language: English Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. The Thirteenth Tribe is a ground breaking work of great importance, if only because it has shaped the way that people think about The Jews. It is based on the theory that European Jews, Ashkenazi Jews from Europe, are not descendants of Abraham but rather are the remnants of a tribe, the Khazars, that converted to Judaism in the Eighth Century. We know little about the Khazars, but we do know for certain that they existed and that they were Jewish. The Jews, Russians, Georgians and Armenians all wrote about the Khazars, but the Khazars left no literature, no books. This was perhaps because the Khazars existed during the Dark Ages, a period from which few books survive today. Koestler s thesis is that while the Khazars as a unified tribe may have disappeared, their descendants survived, only that they were no longer known as the Khazars. Instead, these people are now Eastern European Jews and they continue to live in the same places where the Khazars lived such as in Kiev and Odessa. The view of Arthur Koestler who himself was Jewish is that none of the mass movements of the Jewish people happened at all. Rather, the Jews stayed in exactly the same place where they have been all along because the Eastern European Jews are the Khazars. They are the same people. Just their name has been changed. Which is more logical: The Traditional Jewish view or Arthur Koestler s theory?. Bookseller Inventory # AAV9784871876582

KHAZARIA WAS FINALLY WIPED OUT BY THE FORCES OF GENGHIS KHAN, BUT HISTORICAL EVIDENCE INDICATES THAT THE KHAZARS THEMSELVES MIGRATED TO POLAND AND FORMED THE CRADLE OF WESTERN JEWRY. Item Description: Random House, New York, 1976. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Reprint. 255 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). B&w map. "(T)races the history of the ancient Khazar Empire, a major but almost forgotten power in Eastern Europe, which in the Dark Ages became converted to Judaism. Khazaria was finally wiped out by the forces of Genghis Khan, but evidence indicates that the Khazars themselves migrated to Poland and formed the cradle of Western Jewry. Thereafter (they) found themselves in a precarious position between two major world powers: the Eastern Roman Empire in Byzantium and the triumphant followers of Mohammed. (R)esisting both the Western pressure to become Christian and the Eastern to adopt Islam, (they rejected both and) converted to Judaism. In the second part of this book, 'The Heritage', Mr. Koestler speculates about the ultimate faith of the Khazars and their impact on the racial composition and social heritage of modern Jewry. He produces a large body of meticulously detailed research in support of a theory that sounds all the more convincing for the restraint with which it is advanced. Yet should this theory be confirmed, the term 'anti-Semitism' would become void of meaning, since, as (he) writes, it is based 'on a misapprehension shared by both the killers and the victims. The story of the Khazar Empire, as it slowly emerges from the past, begins to look like the most cruel hoax which history has ever perpetrated'." Gift inscription on free front endpaper, fading to color ar bottom of boards and spine, some werinkling on bottom 2" of rear board due to dampness. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light browning at top edge of flaps, very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, two very small tears at top of spine, very light rubbing, light water stains and very light wrinkling at bottom inside of rear panel and spine - some color discoloration on inside of spine.
