Item Description: London/Edinburgh, Blackwood and Sons, 1915., 1915. Espionage classic. FIRST EDITION: 8vo. pp. 253 + pp. 2 ads. Publisher's light blue cloth, titled in dark blue. Light and marginal browning to page edges, first gathering a little pulled, faint erasure to flyleaf, spine slightly cocked. The cloth is exceptionally clean and bright. An attractive copy of a cheaply-produced book (originally sold at a shilling a copy). Provenance: author and historian Charles Henry Waterland Mander's copy (armorial bookplate to pastedown). Buchan's famous adventurer was one of the fore-runners to James Bond; [author Ian Fleming] "was certainly influenced by no-nonsense British fictional characters such as Richard Hannay" [Gilbert, p.616]. Blanchard A32, Howard Haycraft/Ellery Queen. Bookseller Inventory # 40998

Item Description: William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London, 1915, 1915. 1st edition. Hardcover. Signature of the author on a laid-in slip. Beautifully bound by Asprey in full black morocco, gilt title and author lettering on the spine with gilt rules and raised bands. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. The pages are extremely clean, which is most unusual because the cheap wartime stock used in the production of this title invariably suffers to some degree from toning and/or foxing. An absolutely superb example of Buchan's most famous book, this first Richard Hannay adventure is a classic espionage novel, the subject of many screen adaptations, the best surely by Alfred Hitchcock. Unique thus, especially with the author's signature. Bookseller Inventory # PSHB6076

Item Description: 1915. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1915. 2 pp undated ads. Original light blue cloth. First Edition of Buchan's best-known book, the classic mystery that has withstood the test of time both in book and in film form. This was the first of Buchan's five mysteries to feature the detective Richard Hannay (the others being GREENMANTLE, MR. STANDFAST, THE THREE HOSTAGES and THE ISLAND OF SHEEP). The tale was of course the basis for one of Alfred Hitchcock's most highly-regarded early films, released in 1935. ~This was a cheaply-produced wartime book (price one shilling), with the result that it is now usually encountered in miserable condition. This near-fine copy, however, is unusually clean, with scarcely any wear or soil other than light rubbing at the lower corners of the spine. Atypically, the delicate endpapers remain firm and uncracked; as always, the cheap wartime paper is a little browned in the margins. Blanchard A32. Bookseller Inventory # 11912
