Item Description: Macmillan, 1909. First Deluxe Edition, one of 260 large paper copies bound in full white vellum. Titles are stamped in gilt as is an upper cover vignette. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. A very good copy of this lovely book, vellum a little dusty. 32 beautiful colour plates all mounted on brown art paper and protected by captioned tissue guards. This is Goble's first gift book and what a triumph it is. One of the most beautiful versions of Kingsley's tale ever to have been produced. A contemporary review said, "Goble in his thirty-two beautiful colour plates . . . delights us. He has given us sand and sea, fish and fairies which captivate us at once; for delicacy of colouring and grace of line he has bettered his best, and the volume is a continuous pleasure." (Bookman 1909). Bookseller Inventory # 16427

Item Description: London Hodder and Stoughton for Boots Pure Drug Company [1919], 1919. First edition thus with Smith's illustrations, London Hodder/Boots issue. With 12 beautiful tipped-in colour plates, green and black decorated titlepage and numerous illustrations printed in green throughout the text, all by Jessie Wilcox Smith. 4to, publisher’s bright forest-green cloth with beautifully designed gilt pictorial cover from Ms. Wilcox Smith's designs, and lettered in gilt on both the spine and upper cover. ix, 240 pp. A fine and bright copy of this beautiful book, the book is typically found with heavy foxing, this copy has only a few minor light spots along the page edges and the mildest hint at the prelims, the green cloth is especially sharp and vivid. A BEAUTIFUL COPY ILLUSTRATED BY WILCOX SMITH AND LOVINGLY PRODUCED FOR BOOTS THE CHEMIST. Originally, Kingsley’s WATER BABIES was published in 1863 as a story for the very young. The author’s daughter wrote of Kingsley’s sources for the work, "Places he had seen, and many more he had read and dreamed of in his father’s fine library of voyages and travels, fairies and men of science, fads and foibles, education true and false, Pandora’s box and sanitary science-a matter always dear to his heart-the ways of beasts and birds, fishes and insects, of plant and tree and rock, of river and tide, are all interwoven here with the deepest truths of life and living, of morals and religion. So that while the book enchants the child, it gives the wise man food for thought."-preface. The imaginative range of this book with its many undersea adventures presented Jessie Willcox Smith with intense artistic challenge. The result was a collection of 12 delightful illustrations considered by many the culmination of her technical ability and artistic vision. "Happy are the children who get their first ideas of the marvels of nature all around them from such a lesson-book as this. And perchance, when they are grown men and women, and, like Tom, have won their spurs in the great battle, they may look back with thankful hearts to certain pages in The Water Babies." (–from the original preface written by Rose G. Kingsley to her father's fairy tale). Bookseller Inventory # 26415
