Item Description: (GOBLE,WARWICK)illus. WATER BABIES by Charles Kingsley. London: Macmillan 1909. Featured here is the LIMITED EDITION OF THE BOOK IN A FULL MOROCCO BINDING HOUSED IN A LARGE PICTORIAL CLAMSHELL BOX WITH AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR USED IN THE BOOK. The book is a thick quarto measuring 9" x 11 1/4", bound in a full blue morocco binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. The book spine is decorated in gilt with raised bands and the covers are heavily decorated with triple gilt rules and floral decorated corners. Inside the covers there are gilt dentelles and silk doublures (silk lining). The book is the magnificent DELUXE EDITION, LIMITED TO ONLY 260 COPIES printed on hand-made paper and illustrated by Goble with 32 mounted color plates with lettered tissue guards. The book is housed in a velvet lined cradle. On the opposite side of the box is a special insert holding the original watercolor signed by Goble that appears as a full page color plate on page 32 of the book. The actual image measures 13 1/2" wide x 9 1/4" high and is captioned "Play by me, bathe in me mother and child". It is a beach scene with the mother and the water baby reclining on the sand, with the ocean, rocks and beach related flora surrounding them. This image is duplicated in gilt on the cover of the book and also on the cover of the box. The box is 13 1/2" wide x 17 3/4" high with the backstrip rounded to simulate the spine of a book with extensive gilt decorations and raised bands. Goble's Water Babies is arguably the best edition of this classic story. In his book "Early Children's Books" (p.80), Eric Quayle comments on all the various editions of Water Babies and adds about Goble's edition: "None of these in either artistic or financial terms approaches the sumptuous edition of 1909." Nice copies of the limited edition are rare, an offering like this is a once in a lifetime copy. Bookseller Inventory # 36391

Housed in a velvet-lined red cloth clamshell case.Edward Linley Sambourne (1844-1910), "English draughtsman, illustrator and designer, was born in London, on the 4th of January 1844. He was educated at the City of London School, and also received a few months’ education at the South Kensington School of Art. After a six years' ‘gentleman apprenticeship’ with John Penn & Son, marine engineers, Greenwich, his humorous and fanciful sketches made surreptitiously in the drawing-office of that firm were shown to Mark Lemon, editor of Punch, and at once secured him an invitation to draw for that journal. In April 1867 appeared his first sketch, ‘Pros and Cons,’ and from that time his work was regularly seen, with rare exceptions, in the weekly pages of Punch. In 1871 he was called to the Punch ‘table.’ At the beginning he made his name by his ‘social’ drawings and especially by his highly elaborated initial letters. He drew his first political cartoon, properly so-called, in 1884, and ten years later began regularly to design the weekly second cartoon, following Sir John Tenniel as chief cartoonist in 1901. Examples of his best work in book illustration are in Sir F.C. Burnand’s New Sandford and Merton (1872), and in Charles Kingsley’s Water Babies (1885), which contains some of his most delicate and delightful drawings. The design for the Diploma for the Fisheries Exhibition (1883) is of its kind one of the most extraordinary things in English art. As a political designer, while distinguished for wit and force, he was invariably refined and good-humoured to the uttermost; yet it is essentially as an artist that he takes his highest place. He died on the 3rd of August 1910. See M.H. Spielmann, The History of Punch (London, 1895)" (Encyclopædia Britannica, Eleventh Edition). I. Bookseller Inventory # 00892

"Just Another Destitute Little Chimney-Sweep"or "The Oddest Fairy Tale That There Has Ever Been A Near Fine Copy Of The First Edition of The Water-BabiesKINGSLEY, Charles. The Water-Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land-Baby. With two illustrations by J. Noel Paton, R.S.A. London & Cambridge, 1863. First edition, first issue. Small square octavo (8 x 6 1/8 inches; 201 x 156mm). [viii], [1-3], 4-350, [1 advertisements], 1 blank. With the ‘L’Evoi’ leaf inserted after the dedication. Inserted frontispiece and full-page illustration opposite p. 145. With eight large engraved initial chapter letters.Original dark green fine-grain cloth, front cover with gilt triple-rule border enclosing a pictorial gilt center device depicting Tom, a Fish and a Sea-Horse. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Dark brown coated endpapers, top edge gilt. With the binders ticket of Burn of Kirby St., on the rear pastedown and a small booksellers ticket (John Smith & Son, Glasgow) on the front pastedown. Hinges just starting and top of spine with two very small splits. Otherwise a superlative copy, the gilt bright and fresh, of this scarce children’s classic. Housed in a fleece-lined green cloth clamshell case. Together with a letter dated July 6th, 1950, from David A. Randall (Scribner Book Store NY) to a a former owner (Eugene Grossman) stating "Incidentally, I have just heard from my London agent that you ordered a book (The Water Babies, 1st Issue) from an English catalogue which I wanted very much. If you get a good copy of this book you really have a scarce item.""Charles Kingsley was a rural vicar in Victorian England, and the "land-baby" of the sub-title was his youngest son, five-year-old Grenville Arthur. In writing this fairy tale about the underwater adventures of Tom, a chimney-sweep's climbing-boy, Kingsley uttered many a sermon. But along with his zeal for Anglican Christianity he also brought into play his enthusiasm for nature and his strong sense of indignation at the Victorian practice of using small children as laborers. This copy is from the rare first issue of the first edition. It contains a leaf bearing a poem, L'Envoi. Kingsley had second thoughts about this while the book was being printed, and he had the leaf removed, but not before a few hundred copies of the book had already gone forth." (Gottlieb, Early Children's Books and Their Illustration, 113). Bookseller Inventory # 01480
