Book Description: J.S. Redfield, New York, 1856. Complete first edition set of Edgar Allan Poe's collected writings, the basis of all editions and translations for the next fifty years. Poe was a master of the Gothic, an innovator in horror and science fiction, and the inventor of the detective story, one of the few American writers of his time to earn an international reputation. Highlights include "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Purloined Letter," "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Murders In the Rue Morgue," "Annabel Lee," and the work most celebrated in his lifetime, "The Raven": "Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken! / Leave my loneliness unbroken! -- quit the bust above my door! / Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!" / Quoth the Raven, 'Nevermore.'" The first volumes of the collection appeared within months of Poe's untimely death. The text is based largely on his own corrected manuscripts, gathering together the tales, poems, essays, magazine sketches and squibs, the "poison pen" portraits of fellow poets collected as The Literati, and Poe's only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym. In addition, volume III contains the first attempt at a comprehensive biography of Poe, written by editor Rufus Griswold, Poe's literary executor. Griswold and Poe's relationship was fraught, and it remains unclear whether Poe actually named Griswold executor, or whether Griswold appointed himself in order to have the last word. In his "Memoir of the Author," Griswold takes pains to document each of Poe's petty squabbles and drunken sprees: "When his money was all spent, and the disorder of his dress evinced the extremity of his recent intoxication, he asked in charity means for the prosecution of his journey to Richmond." That said, factual errors are few and minor; Griswold simply overlooks Poe's remarkable originality and industry. All four volumes are first printings in their first bindings, as follows: volume I with the half-title following page xx and the "First of April" publication statement on the terminal ad leaf, in binding A; volume II with the "r" in "choir" dropped on page 46, in binding A; volume III with signature 1 signed "2," in binding E, the earliest for this volume; and the sole printing of Volume IV, in binding H, the only binding for this volume. BAL 16158 (volumes I and II), 16159 (volume III), 16161 (volume IV). A very good set of an important edition, rarely found with all four volumes in their first state: the third and fourth volumes were never offered in a style to match the first two volumes, except when purchased in reprint form. Housed in a custom slipcase. Four twelvemo volumes: volumes I and II in original blindstamped blue cloth, spines blind-ruled and lettered in gilt; volume III in original blindstamped purple cloth, spine decorated in blind and lettered in gilt; volume IV in original blindstamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt and decorated with gilt figure of raven perched on Athene's helmet. Engraved frontispiece portrait in volume I, publisher's advertisements in volumes I and IV. Bookplate to front pastedown and early owner signature erased from front endpaper of volume III; faint shelf number to front pastedown of volume IV. Bindings lightly rubbed, spines sunned. Moderate foxing to volumes I-III; light dampstaining to volumes I and IV; several signatures of volume III sprung; small ink stains to front endpapers and first blank leaf of volume III and bottom edge of volume IV. Expert repair to joints and inner hinges of volume IV. Housed in custom black cloth slipcase. Bookseller Inventory # 100897

Book Description: The Werner Company, Akron, Ohio, 1908. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. This handsome set of Poe (click on photo) is in Very Good Plus condition. Known as The Library Edition, it is bound in brick red cloth covers with die-stamped gilt spine lettering and top-edge gilt. Shelf rubbing is minimal. It has rough-cut pages, most of which are uncut and unread. Only two volumes of tales and one of poems show page-cutting by the original owner. Several pages in Volume II only have small margin stains. (I should point out that Werner also published a less expensive alternate cloth binding in pale gray that used paper labels and did not have re-enforced bindings or colored endpapers. Although the contents are identical in both editions, the gray binding is far less attractive and the paper labels are inferior to the die-stamped gilt found in this more collectible version.) Each volume contains a frontis and other illustrations, all with tissue guards. There are 36 illustrations in all. This century-old set was manufactured with re-enforced bindings so that they remain tight and secure to this day. The book has red marbelized end papers. Each volume has a striking drawing of a sailing ship bookplate from the original owner, whose name was McCruden, on the front endpaper. Each text page features a lovely Art Nouveau-inspired gray-green border. The contents are as follows: Volumes I-V: Tales; Volume VI: Poems; Volumes VII - IX: Criticisms; Volume X: Miscellany. Each volumes measures 5 3/4 by 8 1/4 inches. Length varies per volume, ranging from around 325 through 380 pages. It's a truly lovely set for the Poe aficionado. NOTE: The price will include domestic Media Mail shipping at the single-book rate. However, international buyers should contact me in advance regarding shipping costs. Bookseller Inventory # 000781

This is the 10 volume set of the Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe, published by G.P. Putnam under the Knickerbocker Press. This is the Eldorado Edition, limited to 1,050 copies, of which this is 998. Each volume contains between 5 and 10 illustrations, all of which were drawn by Frederick Simpson Coburn. The textblock is tight and clean, with no markings and very little foxing (in fact, I found none when I flipped through each volume) All of the illustrations have been collated and are present, and I find no missing pages or markings in the volumes. The spines are soiled, as shown. There is some light rubbing to the top of most of the spines, and half of the upper corners are visibly bumped. Still, this set is solid with tight hinges and bindings, and it is a scarce edition of Poe's Complete Works.
