The Seven Seas Edition, one of 1050 sets printed, signed by the author. An extremely fine copy in a full red morocco binding of the absolute highest quality. Leather bound sets of this quality are very rarely seen on the market. The Seven Seas Edition is one of the most respected and sought-after collected works of Kipling ever printed. It includes: Wee Willie Winkie, The Phantom Rickshaw and Other Stories, Captains Courageous, The Jungle Book, The Second Jungle Book, Puck of Pook's Hill, Plain Tales from the Hills, Life's Handicap, The Day's Work, Stalky & Co., Kim, Just So Stories, and much more. Ordinary copies were issued in cloth in twenty-seven volumes. This copy has been exquisitely bound and expanded to fifty-one volumes. PROVENANCE: John Francis Neylan, with his bookplate designed by William H. Wilke and printed by John Henry Nash, the famous California printer. Neylan (1885-1960) was a noted San Francisco lawyer who was chairman of the Board of Regents of the University of California. Additionally he was William Randolph Hearst's chief attorney with close ties to the Hearst newspapers, and thus had enormous political clout and considerable wealth. Stewart, Kipling, pp. 573-574. Item Description: 1937. [in original paperboard cases] [In 35 Volumes.] London: Macmillan and Co., 1937-1939. Original full orange-brown Niger leather, in original ochre paperboard slipcases. This is the magnificent Sussex Edition of Kipling's Complete Works -- the most important and the scarcest edition of Kipling's Works. It is the most important for two reasons: because it contains so much new material not previously published in book form (two entire volumes, plus many additional pieces scattered among the other 33 volumes), and because it constitutes the "definitive edition" of all of Kipling's work, completely revised by Kipling during the final years before his 1936 death. It is the scarcest because only 525 sets (500 for sale) were created in the first place, and because "a substantial portion of this edition was destroyed in unbound sheets during the bombing of London in 1941" [Stewart]; it is quite likely that no more than 150 or 200 sets survive today, and many of those are in institutional collections.~The Sussex Edition was produced "on a lavish scale in order to provide a worthy monument to the genius of a great writer" [from the Prospectus]. The text was printed on handmade paper, with the first sheet of each signature bearing Kipling's ganesha watermark; those copies that survived the Blitz had earlier been bound in full "real Native Tanned Niger leather," natural orange-brown in color, with double gold frame rules on each cover, with lettering and rules in gold on the spines, and with gilded top edges of the leaves. The endpapers are hand-brushed marbled paper, surrounded by gold and blind fillets. In each set Volume I bears Kipling's signature, done on sheets for Macmillan before he died. The volumes were produced two per month, starting in mid-1937, but were sold only in sets at the price of two pounds ten shillings per volume.~This is set #221 and is in remarkably fine, bright condition -- virtually flawless other than a few trivial rubs. Some sets, over the years, have become much darker in color due to improper application of oil to the natural Niger leather bindings; however this set remains bright orange-brown, as it was issued. Furthermore, this set is still in the 35 original ochre-colored paperboard slipcases in which the volumes were issued; it is apparent that these slipcases, delicate and unprinted, were not intended still to be around seventy-five years later (the cases do have occasional minor edge-wear and damp-marking). Finally, loosely inserted into Vol I is the eight-page Prospectus for the Sussex Edition, issued while the volumes were being produced; it is folded and has some edge-wear. In all, one could not hope to acquire a more complete set or a finer set of the most important edition of the Works of Rudyard Kipling. Bookseller Inventory # 12635

Item Description: Macmillan and Co., Limited, London, 1913. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Limited. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Literature. Limited to 1050 sets, not numbered, this main set published from 1913 to 1919, twenty-five volumes. (There were 6 additional volumes published in later years in limited quantities.) Large quarto volumes, cream cloth spines with paper labels over light blue paper covered boards. These books were published with spare spine labels tipped into the rear endpapers, but the previous owner used these labels to make custom folding cases for each volume EXCEPT volume XVI, which still has the spare label in the book. Volume one is SIGNED by Kipling on the half title page. The books are uniformly foxed on the outside of the paper covers with similar tanning of the cloth spines. The endpapers are foxed, but that does not extend into the books. All top edges are gilt with a little spotting, all corners and spine ends are sharp and clean, due to being cased. Most of the silk place ribbons are deteriorated on the ends. The green cloth cases are rubbed, and the spine labels are browned and spotted with a few small chips. There are several small splits at the folding edges of several of the cases. One case (volume XII) has a tear and dent in the fabric which has been repaired. Please contact us for more photographs. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known. In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and to date he remains its youngest recipient. Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined. The Bombay edition was initially published in 20 volumes and limited to 1000 copies. Kipling continued to write and it eventually grew to 31 volumes, but the last 11 volumes were limited to 500 copies only. This collection is twenty-two volumes of the original twenty five limited to 1050. With water marks to the endpapers. Condition: In original publishers' half cloth bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, all volumes are generally sound, with only some light rubbing and scattered marks. Spine label is slightly lifting to volume one and thirteen. Warping to the boards of volume sixteen, and light damp staining to the tail of volume twenty-two's spine. Very light straining to the front hinge of volume one, three, four, seven, ten, and eleven. As well as straining to the rearhinge of volume four, seven, ten, and eleven. Front hinge to volume thirteen is tender. Internally, all volumes are generally firmly bound and bright. Somefoxing to the endpapers and textblock edge. Many leaves are uncut. Overall: VERY GOOD. Bookseller Inventory # 035223

(1914-1926) One of 1050 sets (this being #885) 27 volumes - the first volume of each set was signed by Kipling. The set was issued by Doubleday, as the American version of the Bombay set. Bound in dark green calf half morocco and cloth. Raised bands, gilt decoration in the compartments, top edge gilt by MacDonald. This set was originally bound in "grey boards with canvas backstrip, white paper labels affixed to the spine.". They were all rebound. The first 23 volumes are uniformly faded brown (as is common with green leather), while the last 4 are faded less - with virually no fading on the final volume. There is some light rubbing, but this is a fine, attractive set, Bookseller Inventory # 000029
