Item Description: Excudebat Henr. Stephanus, 1572. FIRST EDITION, with corrected signature sequence in vol. i, but with the title-page matching the first issue, small wormhole in bottom margin of last eighth of vol. iii, with some old repairs, a thin dampmark to upper margin across most of the set, some foxing and spotting, two library stamps (one cancelled) to title-pages, along with an old gift inscription, two blank leaves discarded but the rest present (the last with an old paper repair to corner), pp. 20, xx, cols. xxiii, 1946; [iv], xii, 1700; 1793, [10], 834; 1746, [6], 212, folio, late eighteenth-century marbled calf, spines divided by decorative gilt rolls, green and red morocco lettering pieces, other compartments with corner sprays, central decorative stamps, and small circles all gilt, marbled endpapers, a little rubbed and scratched, touches of wear to spine ends and corners, good The first edition of Henri Estienne’s ‘greatest achievement’, his ‘magnum opus’, ‘a high point in the annals of European scholarship’ (Schreiber), a truly monumental work of dedicated labour and great expense; it famously bankrupted Henri and yet it ‘remains to this day the essential tool for the study of Greek, since there still exists no substitute for it’ (Schreiber). Almost single-handedly Estienne created this pioneering and enormous dictionary, arranged by etymological root instead of strictly alphabetically, with citations for every word. It took at least ten years just to print, but the size and expense meant few scholars could afford it anyway - with sales further hampered by one of Estienne’s compositors plagiarising the contents for a much cheaper and smaller piracy. In addition, heavy scholarly use of those copies that were sold means that it is quite scarce in fine condition; this imposing set, although not in its first binding, is still notable for the lack of substantial repair work or damage to the text.A full bibliographical analysis has not been done, but Schreiber conjectures three separate issues - the first as he describes, with two later issues with different collations and title-pages in the first volume; Adams also records two variants, with varying collations and title-pages. The title-page in this copy clearly matches the first issue given in each bibliography, but the collation aligns with the second variant given by Adams, where the signature sequence at the end of the first volume is corrected and regularised. (Adams S1790/S1791; Schreiber 181; Renouard p. 135). Bookseller Inventory # 51862

Item Description: Henricus Stephanus, Geneva, 1572. Vellum. Book Condition: See Description. First Edition. Stephanus, Henricus. (Estienne, Henri.) Thesaurus graecae linguae. [Geneva], Henricus Stephanus 1572. Five parts in four volumes large folio, vellum with leather labels. With two additional volumes bound in closely matching vellum and leather labels, containing Daniel Scott`s Appendix ad Thesaurum Graecae Linguae, a two volume supplement to Estienne`s work. London, Bettenham, 1745-46. The collation of the four Estienne volumes, which appear to be entirely complete, is complex. Adams S1790 -1791 notes two variant collations; this conforms to neither and has additional variants: Part I conforms to Adams S1790, but has the same final signatures as does S1791 beginning with gggg4. Part II conforms to S1790. For Part III, Adams S1790 has Aaaa-Zzzz6, but here it is Aaaa-Llll6 Mmmm4 Nnnn-Zzzz6, with the text clearly complete. [The leaves of LLl4 are present, but bound in the wrong order.] Part IV conforms to Adams S1790. Part V begins: alpha, *alpha, and beta4, whereas S1790 has alpha, beta, beta [repeat]4. The text of *alpha and beta continues without omission, but beta repeats the numbering of columns used in *alpha. Adams records 3 alpha - 3 omega continuously, which implies there should be 3 xi, but that is skipped in this copy (could Adams have erred?), which continues without omission of any text and with the final catchword on 3 nu conforming to the first word on 3 omicron. In addition, the final leaf of Iiii6 here is not blank as S1790. With all other blanks listed in Adams S1790 present, except Part II GGGG4. All half titles present (those at the front of a volume somewhat dusty.) The collation of the copy in the University of Pennsylvania (Shaaber E394) has other variants, and there apparently were many changes made during this work`s press run. Collation of Scott Appendix: Vol. I [] a B-7X2. Vol. II: []B-8D2. Complete. Some light waterstaining in lower margins throughout the Estienne volumes, but otherwise fine, fresh condition with wide margins. Scott volumes: some light foxing to a few leaves in Volume I, otherwise clean and fresh; top edge of first 50 or so pages creased; bump to lower right corner of first 50 pages of volume II, which also has two pin-sized worm holes one of which extends through about half the book in the extreme lower right corner, not touching any text. First Edition of Henri Estienne`s greatest academic work. {There is a second edition without date and with the imprint `Henr. Stephani Oliva.`} This monumental Greek thesaurus remains unparalleled : Sandys II p. 176 stating, `as a Greek lexicon on a large scale, it is still unsurpassed.` It is a major achievement of Renaissance scholarship and was included in the Printing and the Mind of Man exhibit/catalog. It also is legendary in the history of printing for the resulting financial devastation it caused to Estienne as printer. First Edition of Scott`s supplement. Lowndes 2219 states `A very limited impression of this work was printed.` Apparently Scott also suffered financially from his labor of love. See DNB. The four Estienne volumes are bound in 16th or 17th century vellum, with large central blind stamped decorations on the covers, and with leather and gilt labels on the spines. The two Scott volumes are bound in closely matching vellum but without decoration. Volume I-4 vellum on front hinges split. Volume III also has piece of spine above top raised band torn off but present and repairable. Volume IV has tear at top raised band. Several hinges are split on the Estienne volumes, some vellum edges have come loose from the boards, and a large piece of the top of the spine of the third volume has been torn off, but is present here and can be repaired. Volume I of the Scott Appendix has a split front hinge and tear on spine (no losses). In Volume II the front cover has detached and much of the spine is torn with losses. The book block is nearly loose in the rear cover. I have considered the necessary repairs to the bindings in pricing the set. Each. Bookseller Inventory # 000055
