97 Tafelseiten mit montierten Illustrationen und je einem zwischengebundenem Blatt; 68 Seiten, Folio (ca. 37x29 cm), goldgeprägter Original-Ganzleinenband mit Original-Buchschuber. Tomioka Tessai oder auch Tomioka Yusuke und Tomioka Hyakuren (geb. 25. Januar 1836 in Kyoto; gest. 31. Dezember 1924 ebenda) war ein japanischer Maler und Kalligraf. Er galt als der letzte große Meister der Bunjinga-Tradition und einer der ersten Künstler des Nihonga-Stils. Mushanokoji Saneatsu (geb. 12. Mai 1885 in der Präfektur Tokio; gest. 9. April 1976 ebenda) war ein japanischer Schriftsteller und Maler. Der Buchschuber mit leichteren Stauchspuren sonst sehr gut erhalten.

Condition: Sehr gut. 24 S, [160] S. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Tessai is een groot eclecticus. Hij bezigt allerlei stijlen, Chinese en Japanse, volkse (bijvoorbeeld de Ötsu'e) en geleerde. Hoewel hij een zeer eclectisch kunstenaar was, is het toch vooral in het verlengde van de literaat-schilderkunst dat we hem het best kunnen begrijpen. Het zijn trouwens vooral literaatschilders die hij bewondert, bestudeert en naschildert. Copiëren heeft trouwens niet dezelfde negatieve bijklank als in het westen. Het is een noodzakelijke stap om een volleerd meester te worden en het is het middel om zich van de superieure geest van een grote meester te laten doordringen. Tessai is een soort samenloop van de hele klassieke Sino-Japanse traditie. Kennismaken met zijn schilderkunst en kalligrafie is een wandeling door een grote, eeuwenoude traditie. Tessai is een confucianist en dus een moralist. Hij beleeft een ideaal dat niet meer van zijn tijd is. Zijn confucianisme is niet sectair, maar syncretistisch. Hij is evenzeer door het taoisme en boeddhisme geboeid. Hij is de perfecte literaat (bunjin). Hij absorbeert alles en geeft er op zijn eigenzinnige manier uitdrukking aan. Zo schildert hij Hippocrates als hij bij een vriend-arts een afbeelding van deze grondlegger van de westerse geneeskunst ziet. Zijn thema's zijn voor het overgrote deel uit de Chinese traditie genomen, omdat per slot van rekening daar de oorsprong ligt van het ideaal van de bunjin, maar hij heeft een grote bewondering voor alle cultuurhelden.
