Together, they represent the complete catalogue of one of the largest and most important private collections of its time assembled in the UK. Abbey's "colour-plate collection showed genuine originality and his catalogues represented real advances of knowledge" (ODNB). The art historian Alpheus Hyatt Mayor described Abbey's (1894-1969) huge undertaking as "the greatest book catalogue that any private collector has issued for a very long time" and they remain the core reference works for the study of colour-plate books printed in England from the late 18th- to the mid-19th centuries. The bulk of Abbey's library was sold by Sotheby's from 1966 to 1970. Apheus Hyatt Mayor, book review in The Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, vol. 51, 1 Jan. 1957, pp. 177-8. 3 works in Four volumes, large quarto.
