8vo; original black cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; no dustwrapper; pp. xvi + (ii) + 377, incl. index; illustrations and maps. Top fore-corner of upper board bumped; earlier owner's name signed on front free endpaper; a little foxing. Good to very good condition. 'The exploration and exploitation of non-European areas by Europeans during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries form one of the greatest phenomena of the Renaissance; one that had never previously been witnessed on such a scale and one that is still of prime importance in the world today. It is curious, therefore, that this highly significant phase of human endeavor should have had no concise, adequate, one-volume treatment since the publication of Sophus Ruge's Geschichte des Zeitalters der Entdeckungen in 1881. Good as Ruge's book is, its value for the average interested reader is lessened by its being in German and being out-of-print; moreover, a good deal of information has come to light since Ruge wrote. True, the subject is adequately covered by the "Pioneer Histories" (London: A. & C. Black, Ltd.) but this is an uncoordinated series of ten volumes. One might also mention the publications of the Hakluyt Society, but they run to about two hundred volumes!'.
