Item Description: Benn, 1927. First edition, Edition de Luxe. Number 4 of only 50 copies, signed by Edmund Dulac. Publisher's creamy vellum with leather title label. Top edge gilt. A very good copy indeed, vellum a little bowed with a couple of minor marks. Page edges slightly browned and some foxing to the preliminaries and occasionally to a plate mount. Twelve colour plates and numerous black and white drawings in the text. The tiny print run makes this one of the rarest of all the illustrated gift books. The illustrations for this book mark a new departure in Dulac's work. He enters a phase of greens and blues, views the scenes from above and afar. Hughey says, "The detailing and design of the pictures present some of Dulac's most careful and superb painting." In fact, the watercolours he produced for this book were his own favourites. Item Description: New York George H. Doran [1927], 1927. First edition. With 12 beautiful tipped-in color plates and additional line drawings throughout by Edmund Dulac. Large 8vo, publisher's original forest green cloth, gilt lettered on spine, ship design in blind on upper cover with decorative gilt lettering, palm motif endpapers. This copy with much of the very scarce original dustjacket still included. 287 pp. A handsome copy, the green cloth fresh and unfaded with only a bit of evidence of gentle shelving at the tips or edges, internally clean, 11 of the 12 plates very fresh and fine, one plate a bit creased, another plate is tipped in off center, though evenly positioned. The rare dustjacket, seldom encountered, is largely complete though it lacks its spine panel and has wear along the edges and folds. FIRST EDITION AND A VERY uncommon Dulac title, ESPECIALLY WITH EVEN ANY REMNANT OF THE JACKET PRESENT. This, the first U.S. edition has an extra drawing not in the U.K. issue. One of Dulac's liveliest books, and one of the world’s great stories. A perfect marriage of author and illustrator. Stevenson's great adventure at sea is a must-read book for boys of every generation and Dulac has made this edition truly one of the choicest. Bookseller Inventory # 26341
