Pp. viii, 292, followed by 8 pages of publisher's advertisements numbered 5R-1083 with Treasure Island listed on p.2 as having 304 pages. Item Description: London Cassell 1883, 1883. First Edition. Original publisherÕs blue gilt-stamped cloth, hinges slightly starting, some cocking, some rubbing, some slight fraying at top and bottom of spine, overall very good. With the following points: "Dead ManÕs Chest" is uncapitalized on pages 2 and 7; with "rain" for "vain" in the last line of page 40; the letter "a" is not present in 6th line of page 63; the "8" is present in the pagination on page 83; the number "7" is lacking completely from the pagination number on page 127 (it is likely that the copies with the Ò7Ó lacking completely precede those copies with the handstamped Ò7Ó); the period is lacking following "opportunity" in the 20th line of page 178; with "worse" for "worst" in the 3rd line of page 197. the 8 pages of advertisements are the October ads "dated 5R-1083". The book was published on November 14, 1883 and October ads, were likely used in the earliest binding. There are copies with July ads, which may have been used when the October ads were used up, and there are copies with December advertisements. The book was issued in six different cloth colors, for which there is no established (or even supposed) priority. The most famous pirate novel of all-time and one of the great landmarks of adventure fiction. Enclosed in a custom clamshell box. Bookseller Inventory # 9280J

Item Description: London: Cassell & Company, Limited, 1883, 1883. Octavo. Original red cloth (the book was issued in various coloured cloth bindings), titles to spine gilt, covers blocked in blind with a single line border, black coated endpapers. Housed in a red cloth chemise, and red quarter morocco and cloth slipcase. Bookplate to front pastedown. Spine relined, rolled and faded, cloth lightly marked, a little wear to tips, hinges expertly repaired. An excellent copy. Frontispiece map with captions printed in red, brown and blue. First edition, first impression, with the following points: "dead man's chest" not capitalised on pages 2 or 7; the first letter of "vain" broken in the last line, page 40; the "a" not present in line 6, page 63; the "8" dropped from the pagination on page 83; the "7" overstamped in the pagination on page 127; the full stop not present following "opportunity" in line 20, page 178; with "worse" in line 3, page 197; and the first state October advertisements, coded 5R-1083 (some copies have July and November advertisements, both of which were likely used later by the binder). Treasure Island was originally written as a pendant to the now-famous treasure map the author had drawn to entertain his young stepson "on a rainy day in the Scottish Highlands" (Grolier), and was serialised in Young Folks magazine from October 1881 to January 1882 under the pseudonym "Captain George North". It was only with the appearance of this first edition, however, that it received any kind of critical attention, and "was immediately hailed by critics as a classic". This copy is from the library of Jean Hersholt (1886–1956), the film actor and humanitarian, with his shelfmark to the inner cover of the chemise, and also has a contemporary gift inscription to Herbert Howard to the half-title. Herbert was the son of George Howard, ninth earl of Carlisle, and correspondent for The Times with the British Expeditionary Force in Egypt; he was killed at the Battle of Omdurman on 2 September 1898. Item Description: Benn, 1927. First edition, Edition de Luxe. Number 4 of only 50 copies, signed by Edmund Dulac. Publisher's creamy vellum with leather title label. Top edge gilt. A very good copy indeed, vellum a little bowed with a couple of minor marks. Page edges slightly browned and some foxing to the preliminaries and occasionally to a plate mount. Twelve colour plates and numerous black and white drawings in the text. The tiny print run makes this one of the rarest of all the illustrated gift books. The illustrations for this book mark a new departure in Dulac's work. He enters a phase of greens and blues, views the scenes from above and afar. Hughey says, "The detailing and design of the pictures present some of Dulac's most careful and superb painting." In fact, the watercolours he produced for this book were his own favourites. Item Description: Cassell & Company, Limited, London, 1883. Book Condition: Very Good +. First edition. Octavo (pages 191 x 124 mm): viii, 292, [4 pgs. advertisements correctly dated "5R-10.83" for the first printing]. Frontispiece map of Treasure Island printed in four colors and original tissue guard intact. Many argue that the correct ads is the only requisite point for the first printing (correct here). This copy has these additional points sometimes cited for priority (although of lesser importance in our opinion): "dead man's chest" is not capitalized on pgs. 2 and 7; "rain" for "vain" in the last line of pg. 40; the "a" is not present in line 6 of pg. 63; the "8" is present in the pagination on pg. 83, which is generally lacking; the "7" is lacking in the pagination on pg. 127 (some copies have bold-stamped "7"); the period is lacking following "opportunity" in line 20 of pg. 178; "worse" for "worst" in line 3 of pg. 197; and "Treasure Island" is listed as having 304 pages on pg. 2 of the publisher's advertisements.Original light-green cloth with covers ruled in blind and spine lettered in gilt. Original black-coated endpapers with Maggs description tipped in (and two previous descriptions torn off with small paper stubs left behind). Corners a bit bumped and ink mark on front board. Rear hinge intact, front hinge likely repaired at an early date. On the whole an attractive copy that has been well-preserved in an early clamshell case. Contemporary owner's name, dated Dec. 10, 1883, on the verso of the front end paper, less than a month after the publication date, Nov. 14, 1883. With the morocco bookplate of Josiah Kirby Lilly (Jr.), President of Eli Lilly and Company, noted book collector and founder of the University of Indiana's Lilly Library. The most famous pirate tale ever written and the prototype for adventure novels: "Treasure Island established itself as a classic, drawing plaudits from the widest range of literary sensibilities. In 1890 W.B. Yeats wrote to tell [Stevenson] that the book was the only one in which his seafaring grandfather had ever taken any pleasure and that he reread it on his deathbed with infinite satisfaction. Jack London, in so many ways RLS's true spiritual heir, declared 'His Treasure Island will be a classic to go down with Robinson Crusoe, Through the Looking Glass and The Jungle Books'" (Frank McLynn, Robert Louis Stevenson, pg. 203) Beinecke 240-241. Gumuchian 5443. Morgan Library, Early Children's Books and Their Illustrations, 206. Osborne Collection II, pg. 1030. Prideaux 11. Princeton 22. Very Good +. Bookseller Inventory # 835

Item Description: Cassell & Company, Limited, London, 1883. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. Pp, viii, 292. Map frontispiece. 4 page publisher's list dated July 1883 (5G-783) Original brick brown cloth ruled blind and lettered gilt on spine. Spine a little darkened and hinges and other extremities rubbed. Some soiling to boards. Slight fraying top and bottom of spine. Spine leaning. Very dark green (or are they black?) coated endpapers. Front inner hinge with 3 inch crack from the bottom. Back inner hinge cleanly cracked from top to bottom. Points of significance: Capitals not used for " dead man's chest" on pages 2 and 7. The "v" in vain, last line page 40, only partially printed. The "a" missing from the phrase "at a glance" on page63. Page 127 reads 12, but there is no correction. The full stop is lacking from line 20 on page 178. Miss-print on line 3, page 197, (worse for worst). A far from contemptible copy and one of the greatest products of a Scottish mind and sensibility. Bookseller Inventory # 02362

Item Description: Cassell & Co., London, 1883. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. First edition. First edition in green cloth, with the often cited "rain" for "vain" point - which isn't a point at all as all first printings have this. (Little known fact: it actually is an issue point on first U.S. editions printed the following year, which perhaps is the reason for the confusion). On this copy, the 7 is missing on page 127 and also the 8 on page 83. Both points vary, priority if any unknown. With the earliest ads dated July 1883.
