Book Description: London Cassell 1883, 1883. First Edition. Original publisherÕs blue gilt-stamped cloth, hinges slightly starting, some cocking, some rubbing, some slight fraying at top and bottom of spine, overall very good. With the following points: "Dead ManÕs Chest" is uncapitalized on pages 2 and 7; with "rain" for "vain" in the last line of page 40; the letter "a" is not present in 6th line of page 63; the "8" is present in the pagination on page 83; the number "7" is lacking completely from the pagination number on page 127 (it is likely that the copies with the Ò7Ó lacking completely precede those copies with the handstamped Ò7Ó); the period is lacking following "opportunity" in the 20th line of page 178; with "worse" for "worst" in the 3rd line of page 197. the 8 pages of advertisements are the October ads "dated 5R-1083". The book was published on November 14, 1883 and October ads, were likely used in the earliest binding. There are copies with July ads, which may have been used when the October ads were used up, and there are copies with December advertisements. The book was issued in six different cloth colors, for which there is no established (or even supposed) priority. The most famous pirate novel of all-time and one of the great landmarks of adventure fiction. Enclosed in a custom clamshell box. Bookseller Inventory # 9280J

Book Description: Cassell & Company, Limited, London, 1883. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. Pp, viii, 292. Map frontispiece. 4 page publisher's list dated July 1883 (5G-783) Original brick brown cloth ruled blind and lettered gilt on spine. Spine a little darkened and hinges and other extremities rubbed. Some soiling to boards. Slight fraying top and bottom of spine. Spine leaning. Very dark green (or are they black?) coated endpapers. Front inner hinge with 3 inch crack from the bottom. Back inner hinge cleanly cracked from top to bottom. Points of significance: Capitals not used for " dead man's chest" on pages 2 and 7. The "v" in vain, last line page 40, only partially printed. The "a" missing from the phrase "at a glance" on page63. Page 127 reads 12, but there is no correction. The full stop is lacking from line 20 on page 178. Miss-print on line 3, page 197, (worse for worst). A far from contemptible copy and one of the greatest products of a Scottish mind and sensibility. Bookseller Inventory # 02362

Book Description: Benn, 1927. First edition, Edition de Luxe. Number 4 of only 50 copies, signed by Edmund Dulac. Publisher's creamy vellum with leather title label. Top edge gilt. A very good copy indeed, vellum a little bowed with a couple of minor marks. Page edges slightly browned and some foxing to the preliminaries and occasionally to a plate mount. Twelve colour plates and numerous black and white drawings in the text. The tiny print run makes this one of the rarest of all the illustrated gift books. The illustrations for this book mark a new departure in Dulac's work. He enters a phase of greens and blues, views the scenes from above and afar. Hughey says, "The detailing and design of the pictures present some of Dulac's most careful and superb painting." In fact, the watercolours he produced for this book were his own favourites. Book Description: Roberts Brothers, Boston, 1884. Cloth. Book Condition: Good. First American Edition. First American Edition. viii, [1]-292, [12 ads] pages. 12 pages of undated ads. Original aqua blue cloth decorated in black. First American (and first illustrated) edition. Cloth. The first English edition, un-illustrated, had been published in November, 1883; this American edition, with four plates by F. T. Merrill, was published in February 1884. The first English illustrated edition, with 26 plates including the four from Roberts Bros., was not published until mid-1885. This copy is from the second issue (with the error "rain" corrected to "vain" on the last line of p. 40 - and with twelve rather than four pages of ads). According to bibliographers (such as the Yale and Princeton collections), the book appears in brown, grey, or yellow cloth, without priority. However, this copy is in aqua blue cloth - a fourth, unrecorded color, and certainly the scarcest of the four. Condition is good - moderate wear at the spine ends, a few marks to the the covers, one plate edge-worn where it must have once been loose, spine slanted. In our experience, this Boston edition is considerably scarcer than the 1883 English one, even on this side of the Atlantic - and when it does turn up, it is typically in atrocious condition. Beinecke (Yale) 244 (yellow) & 245 (grey) - no indication of p. 40 reading, but both with 4 pp ads; Princeton 22A, copy 1 (grey, "rain", 4 pp ads) & copy 2 (yellow, "vain", 12 pp ads) & copy 3 (brown, "vain", 12 pp ads).
