Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of jacket and spine, top front jacket and spine faded, some slight yellowing to back jacket, corners and folds slightly rubbed, price clipped, no inscriptions, small London bookseller's label to copyright page, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 332pp. The relationship between Tsao Yin (1658-1712), a servant to the early Ch'ing dynasty Emperor and his service in the Imperial Household. Jonathan Dermot Spence (1936-2021), was an English born American historian, sinologist, and writer specialising in Chinese history. He was Sterling Professor of History at Yale University from 1993 to 2008. Spence frequently used biographies to examine cultural and political history. Another common theme is the efforts of both Westerners and Chinese 'to change China', and how such efforts were frustrated. Quite a scarce book.
