Hardcover (Original Cloth). Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Edition. The value of grass has been recognized from prehistoric times and the twentieth-century may well be seeing more intensive study of grass and grassland economy than any that preceded it. Within the past 100 years the aesthetic value of grass for pleasure and sport has also gradually gained recognition. Here we have a book which delves deeply into the scientific side of grass culture and it is doubtful whether any more comprehensive account of turf composition and weed and pest control in many parts of the world, has ever appeared in Great Britain. The author discusses a wide range of soils found in many countries and argues that there is scope for future correlation between soil types and crops. With increasing emphasis. on recreation during the post-war years, the development of sports facilities involving the provision of high-class turf has become of prime importance. The application of scientific principles to turf production has obvious value, but little attempt has been made in previous works to describe and correlate scientific developments relating to turf culture in a form intelligible to both the scientist and the practical man. In this book the relevant scientific principles and developments have been described and applied with their implications in terms of practical results. The book has been designed to cater for the needs of the professional groundsman, the amateur and the student, all of whom are interested in the provision of high quality turf for either sports or ornamental purposes.
