Item Description: New York Macmillan 1928, 1928. The book is a ÒNew EditionÓ with illustrations by renowned Western artists Charles M. Russell and drawings from western scenes by Frederic Remington. This is the personal copy of actress Mary Brian and is signed by her. Mary Brian starred in one of the earliest Western ÔtalkiesÕ, the 1929 film version of ÔThe VirginianÕ adapted from the novel by Owen Wister, directed by Victor Fleming, written principally by Howard Estabrook, and starring Gary Cooper, Richard Arlen, Walter Huston. Decorative dark brown cloth boards with a full-color illustration by Charles Russell affixed to the front board depicting a camp site set at the edge of a forest near a flowing river with a large tent and a camp fire going. Near fine copy with the barest hint of edge wear without dust jacket [AS ISSUED??]. A lovely copy. With an original working script for the film, also the personal copy of Mary Brian, in two sections (one 42 pages - staple bound, the other 246 pages - bradbound) for the film. With a typed letter signed of provenance from film historian and archivist Anthony Slide, confirming that both items are from the estate of Mary Brian which was given to him by Miss Brian. The letter is on Mr. SlideÕs personal printed stationery, and is signed by him and dated June 25, 2010. Both the book and the script are enclosed together in a custom clamshell box. Mary Brian (1906 Ð 2002) was an American actress and movie star who successfully made the transition from 'silents' to 'talkies.' Her most notable roles included George CukorÕs comedy The Royal Family of Broadway (1930) with Ina Claire and Fredric March, and in Lewis MilestoneÕs comedy The Front Page (1931) with Adolphe Menjou and Pat O'Brien. Item Description: Printed for the Limited Editions Club by the Plantin Press, Los Angeles, 1951. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Introduction by Struthers Burt. Illustrations by William Moyers. Bevelled cloth, leather spine and title labels, slipcase, a fine copy. Signed by Moyers. Publication notices laid loose. Reprint edition. Limited to 1,500 copies, this is copy number 444. A fine press edition and in my opinion, an integral version to collect with the original and with the 1911 edition illustrated by Russell and Remington. Six Score 116: "Although a novel, this book probably created more impressions of what a cowboy was like - even among cowboys - than any other work, fact or fiction. Its popularity is attested to by sales of over two million copies. Whether totally accurate or not, it is absorbing reading." Merrill's Aristocrats. Dobie p. 124: "Wister was an outsider looking in. His hero, 'The Virginian,' is a cowboy without cows - like the cowboys of Eugene Manlove Rhodes; but this hero does not even smell of cows, whereas Rhodes's men do. Nevertheless, the novel authentically realizes the code of the range, and it makes such absorbing reading." Dobie/Dykes 44. Graff 4725. Signed by Illustrator(s). Bookseller Inventory # 943
