A near fine copy. The limited edition of THE VIRGINIAN., one of the most famous western novels, and the model for many later films and works of fiction in the western genre. This edition was limited to 100 copies, of which this is number eighteen, signed by Wister, and printed on Japan vellum, with illustrations by C.M. Russell and Frederic Remington. Curiously, this limited edition was issued by the publishers nine years after the first, which had by then achieved great fame. First Printing Near fine in tan cloth covered boards with gilt, black and red text and decorations stamped in the spine and front board. The heel of the spine is rubbed and worn in three very small areas causing slight, shallow breaks in the cloth none any deeper than 1/16". An old bookseller's label is afixed to the lower inside edge of the first free end page; otherwise, there are no markings or indications of previous ownership. Without its extremely scarce, red cloth dust jacket. This copy is accompanied by a signed, handwritten letter by Owen Wister to "My Dear Miss Layton" for her note to him about "The Virginian" confirming that such a person never existed except "in a general way". The letter is dated Nov. 14, 1903, a year and eight months after the publication of the book. 504 pages of text followed by 6 pages of ads. Illustrated with 8 plates by Arthur I. Keller which are all present. An extremely bright and handsome copy of a classic western fiction title without a hint of soiling or fading. This is the personal copy of actress Mary Brian and is signed by her. Mary Brian starred in one of the earliest Western ÔtalkiesÕ, the 1929 film version of ÔThe VirginianÕ adapted from the novel by Owen Wister, directed by Victor Fleming, written principally by Howard Estabrook, and starring Gary Cooper, Richard Arlen, Walter Huston. Decorative dark brown cloth boards with a full-color illustration by Charles Russell affixed to the front board depicting a camp site set at the edge of a forest near a flowing river with a large tent and a camp fire going. Near fine copy with the barest hint of edge wear without dust jacket [AS ISSUED??]. A lovely copy. With an original working script for the film, also the personal copy of Mary Brian, in two sections (one 42 pages - staple bound, the other 246 pages - bradbound) for the film. With a typed letter signed of provenance from film historian and archivist Anthony Slide, confirming that both items are from the estate of Mary Brian which was given to him by Miss Brian. The letter is on Mr. SlideÕs personal printed stationery, and is signed by him and dated June 25, 2010. Both the book and the script are enclosed together in a custom clamshell box. Mary Brian (1906 Ð 2002) was an American actress and movie star who successfully made the transition from 'silents' to 'talkies.' Her most notable roles included George CukorÕs comedy The Royal Family of Broadway (1930) with Ina Claire and Fredric March, and in Lewis MilestoneÕs comedy The Front Page (1931) with Adolphe Menjou and Pat O'Brien.
