Book Description: Harper & Row, New York, 1963. First edition of Sendak's celebrated and controversial picture book. His fable of rebellion and escape was criticized upon publication as too confusing and scary for children, but Where The Wild Things Are appealed to its audience on a primal level, and won the Caldecott Medal in 1964. Fifty years later, it remains a bestseller, and Sendak's iconic illustrations are part of the imaginary landscape of American childhood. "'And now,' cried Max, 'let the wild rumpus start!'" This copy has all first edition points: the publisher's price of $3.50, the correct code on the front flap, and jacket copy with no mention of the Caldecott Medal or the New York Times Best Illustrated Award. It was customary for bookstores to apply Caldecott stickers to their copies of the winning books each year; later printings would have the medal embossed on the front panel of the jacket. This copy once had the medal affixed as a sticker, underscoring its priority. A very good copy of one of the greatest children's books. Oblong quarto, original grey cloth over paper pictorial boards, patterned endpapers, original unclipped pictorial dust jacket. Light soiling to jacket, inobtrusive early tape repairs, small chip to head of spine. Faint trace of Caldecott sticker to front panel. Bookseller Inventory # 100456

Book Description: Harper & Row, 1963. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. MAURICE SENDAK (illustrator). 1st Edition. FIRST STATE of the First Edition, First Printing of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE with the First Printing, First state dust jacket. All first state points present. Near fine book in a near fine dust jacket. The identifying points for the first state dust jacket include the unique content of the information found only on the First State jacket flaps (no mention of the Caldecott award, and instead includes a three paragraph blurb about Sendak on the rear flap and a three paragraph blurb about the book on the front inner flap). The first state book is equally unique in that the colors of the inks used on the end papers as well as many of the internal pages are different from the later printings. Unpaginated. Please see detailed images (taken both with and without the dust jacket protector). The book has crisp boards in near fine condition. The corners are sharp, and the book has no edgewear. The binding is tight and square. The book is in beautiful condition for this title which if often found with scribbles, writing, ruined spines, alot of edgewear and other issues that revolve around first edition children¿s books. The boards are clean with no fading, and no scribbles. The stunning end papers are in perfect condition with no inscriptions, no owner names, no bookstore stamps, and no bookplates. The internal pages are clean with but a tiny stray faint handling mark to about 2 pages, otherwise the pages are clean with no writing, no stains, no handling marks, no rips, no bent pages, and no foxing. Beautiful clean, crisp, bright copy of a children¿s book in hard to find clean condition! The scarce original first state, first edition dust jacket has benefited from some slight restoration to repair a few small intact tears to jacket, and as such shows in beautiful condition with the usual age toning and light soiling as commonly found with this dust jacket. The dust jacket is NOT price clipped and has a stated price of $3.50 on the inner front flap, bottom of flap has the requisite code of 40-80, and 1163. The price is not important in the determination of the first state jacket as the first state is exclusively determined by the content of the information found on the inner front and rear flaps. A very handsome example of this title presenting very well with the stunning jacket and clean, interior at a great price for this title! ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Book Description: New York: Harper & Row, 1963, 1963. Oblong quarto. Original cloth-backed pictorial paper boards. With the Sendak designed dust jacket. Housed in a blue quarter morocco solander box made by The Chelsea Bindery. Trivial bump to the top edge but an excellent copy in the nicked and lightly spotted, price-clipped dust jacket with a number of brown marks from some liquid having been splashed. Illustrated by Sendak. First edition, first printing, first issue. There seem to be multiple issues of the first printing of this elusive and important book. Variations in price occur throughout the later states but have no bearing on the status of the true first issue. Primacy is established through the text of the blurb which, as in the present copy, makes no mention of the Caldecott Award bestowed upon the book on publication. The winning of such a prestigious prize compelled the publishers to recall the entire edition and change the text on the dust wrapper to include the achievement. Copies therefore with the original blurb are rare and are indubitably the earliest. Bookseller Inventory # 41539
