Despite the text of the back colophon, this copy is signed by Valenti Angelo but not Janet Lewis. "Decorations by Valenti Angelo" on title page. Bookplate with an illustration of a squirrel tipped in on front pastedown: "Hawley Ellason Strong; His Book; Store Up!" Pages are very clean and intact. Covers are very clean and intact except for some light rubbing at the corners and edges and a few small marks on the front and back. Binding is tight. A Very Good copy. Historical fiction about the infamous case involving the imposture of Martin Guerre in sixteenth-century France. Janet Lewis (1899-1998) was an American novelist and poet. In 1992, she was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Valenti Angelo (1897-1982) was an Italian-American printmaker, illustrator, and author. He was renowned for his printmaking and linocuts, and his work appeared in numerous books during his career. Signed by Illustrator(s).
