Item Description: 1895-1897, 1895. hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good and quite scarce. Two small canvas-covered sketchbooks (dated 1895-1897) with ties, full of pencil sketches and several pen-and-ink drawings by the teen-aged future illustrator of Winnie The Pooh. The larger book (7" x 4-7/8") has pencilled notes and calculations referring to a Cricket match and a note "Shepard, EH Sketching Book" in Shepard's hand on the front pastedown. Of the 48 pages, 42 have sketches ranging from rudimentary to detailed, some SIGNED or initialled by the artist. Two of the sketches are detailed pen-and-ink depictions of soldiers at camp. Subjects include a self portrait, horses, camels, trains, churches, women, and bridges. The smaller book (7-1/4" x 3-1/2"), unsigned but obviously by Shepard, contains sketches of some of the same scenes as in the larger book on 35 of 48 pages--mainly of figures and country scenes including one of a churchyard at Wilmington dated 1895. Shepard would have been 16 to 18 years old at the time of these sketches. Shepard began studying drawing at about this time and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy in 1897. He began selling his drawings to magazines in 1900 and married a fellow student in 1904. His daughter Mary was born in 1909. These sketch books were acquired from the estate of E. V. Knox, Mary's husband. Rare and extremely early examples of Shepard's work executed in a confident hand and showing great promise. We believe these to be the earliest drawings by Shepard ever offered for sale. Bookseller Inventory # 012407

Item Description: London: Methuen and Co., 1924, 1926, 1927, 1928. 8vo, x, 100 pp.; xi, 158 pp.; x, 103 pp.; and xi, 178 pp. In blue, green, red, and rose cloth, covers stamped and panelled in gilt, backstrips gilt lettered. Top edges gilt. Spine panels uniformly very slightly aged, endpapers and pastedowns with the expected minor offsetting from flaps -- both indicators of originality. The dust-jacket flap of When We Were Very Young has a small section at the top neatly trimmed and the front panel bears an unobtrusive 2-inch tear without loss. An unsophisticated set that has been together since publication to the present day. Enclosed in a new cloth box for protection. First editions, very rare first state of When We Were Very Young with blank end-papers and no IX in the preliminary pagination. One of the half dozen most famous childrenÕs books in the English language; complete sets in original condition as issued from the day of publication are as desirable as they are rare. MilneÕs tales and ShepardÕs immortal illustrations are iconic and referenced in every book about 20th-century childrenÕs books. C.R. Milne (Christopher Robin) did not live easily with his fame and retired to Dartmouth in Devon where he happily ran The Harbour Bookshop for many years. Likewise, Shepard grew to resent Òthat silly old bearÓ and felt that these illustrations overshadowed his other work. Bookseller Inventory # 104792

Item Description: Methuen 1926 1927 1928, 1924. Four volumes, all first editions. 8vo. Each volume in original cloth with gilt titles and vignettes to the upper cover complete in pictorial dustwrappers. When We Were Very Young is a fine copy in a very good dustwrapper with a small gift inscription and a little wear to the spine ends and corners of the dustwrapper and tanning to the spine. The remaining three books are all fine copies in fine dustwrappers, with the pale coloured dustwrapper bright and crisp and just the very slightest surface wear to the heads of the spine. Overall a most attractive set of this landmark of children's literature. Illustrated throughout in line by E.H. Shepard. Inspired by stories made up to tell to his son, Christopher Robin Milne, the 'Winnie the Pooh Books' quickly established themselves amongst the cornerstones of children's literature. Having been asked to provide some space fillers for Punch, these semi-fictitious accounts of his son's doings were transformed into verse and augmented and printed under the running title When We Were Very Young. After a few appearances, the verses were expanded to fill a full page and an illustrator, Punch's political cartoonist, E.H. Shepard was found. When Milne had what he felt to be enough verses to fill a small book, he approached his publisher, Methuen, who agreed with a reticence shown by the publication of only 5175 copies of the first edition. Success was instant and by the end of the year 43,000 copies of the book had been sold. Despite the success of his first book, it was with his second book, a continuation but this time in prose, and the eponymous character, Winnie the Pooh (who appeared in essence in When We Were Very Young, but under the title of Edward Bear), that guaranteed Milne's immortality as a children's author. The tales of Pooh, Piglet and friends have been produced in 25 languages and sold 70 million copes since first publication, a figure that is still increasing at a rate of 500,000 copies a year. Item Description: London Methuen and co. 1924, 1926, 1927 1928, 1928. First Edition of each volume. Illustrated by E.H. Shepard throughout each volume. 8vo, beautifully bound by Bayntun-Riviere in fine full gilt decorated morocco. Each volume is bound in a colour to match the original cloth covers. The spines are richly gilt, the covers are pictorially decorated in gilt with images of Pooh and his friends. The original covers and spine panels are bound into the rear of each book. All volumes are housed together in a cloth covered slipcase. An elegant production. x,100; xi,158; x,103; xi,178 pp. All copies are very fine and beautifully preserved. VERY FINE COPIES OF THE FIRST EDITIONS OF EACH OF THE FOUR POOH BOOKS, BEAUTIFULLY BOUND. These charming children’s classics contain delicately detailed illustrations and some of the most beloved stories of all time. From the first poem or story to the last drawing, the reader is transported to another world of imagination and youthful play. "When We Were Very Young" was the first of the "Pooh" books and was extremely successful in both America and England. Ironically, when A.A. Milne was first presented with the possibility of Ernest Shepard being the illustrator for this first Pooh book, he was less than pleased, having never been particularly drawn to Shepard’s style. But the illustrator won out in the end and the rest is legend. The book’s success in both America and England was phenomenal, and it went through six printings in just one year and six more the next. The public voraciousness for his work inspired Milne to follow WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG with WINNIE THE POOH, NOW WE ARE SIX, and THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER. Some of the most cherished and beloved verses of our time rest on the charmingly illustrated pages of this first volume in the series of books that have become timeless classics. This book is dedicated to Milne’s son, Christopher Robin Milne, who "prefers to call himself Billy Moon." The second book in the series is WINNIE THE POOH and the one included here is a beautiful copy of the most famous of the four Pooh books. Milne's classic story, all about Christopher Robin, Winnie-The-Pooh, and their friends Eeyore, Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga, and Baby Roo. WINNIE-THE-POOH came into being in the wake of his first book of verse, WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG, which was the first collaboration of Milne’s words and E.H. Shepard’s delightful illustrations. Milne and Shepard truly ascended to harmonious heights with the cast of characters in WINNIE-THE-POOH based on the stuffed animal collection of Milne’s own son, Christopher Robin, who also became immortalized as one of the main characters in the Pooh series. "E.H. Shepard’s illustrations to A.A. Milne’s POOH stories form without doubt one of the great classics of children’s book illustration. It is important to understand, however, how remarkable that is for Shepard’s success as an illustrator was not based on the technical power of draughtsmanship we see in the work of artists such as Rackham. We do not go with him for a prolonged journey of the eye as we do with the great masters of drawing. His illustrations are classics for a wholly different reason. Our approach must be through the eyes of childhood, for Shepard’s Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, and Tigger cast their compulsive spell because the artist only ever makes them but very slightly removed from the stuffed toys on the nursery shelf. Whereas Beatrix Potter’s animals are almost transformed into furry occupants of the same domain, in the case of Shepard the journey is made in precisely the opposite direction. There is a slightness to them, a delightful, rapid, thrown-off quality. Shepard’s genius lay surely in being able to match exactly the mood of Milne’s texts which have a similar and complementary rambling quality. A less whimsical artist would have upset the balance. As it is, writer and illustrator were perfectly allied in a curiously English way, achieving thereby one of the great classics of childhood literature" (THE POOH SKETCH BOOK, Sibley. Item Description: Methuen & Co., Ltd, London, 1928. First edition. A complete set of the first, UK trade editions for all four "Pooh" books. "When We Were Very Young" is an about Fine copy of the book with spine gently cocked and slight offsetting to the end papers from the jacket. In a Very Good (or a little less) dust jacket that is toned on the spine, lightly soiled and with a few moderate chips and tears, the ones at the top of the spine professionally closed. "Winnie The Pooh" is a Fine copy of the book with the gilt top-edge just a bit dusty, otherwise lovely, in a Very Good + example of the dust jacket, toned on the spine and with a spot of soiling at the foot of the spine, but generally in excellent condition. "Now We Are Six" is a Near Fine copy of the book with the spine a bit faded and worn at the extremities, in a just about Fine example of the dust jacket with only trivial wear. "The House at Pooh Corner" also just about Fine with the spine lightly faded, and minor dustiness to the top-edge, in an attractive, Near Fine dust jacket with a small hole on the front panel, near the spine, and the spine a bit toned, otherwise excellent. Also included is a rare Methuen advertisement for "The House at Pooh Corner" that states: "Ready in the Autumn, 1928." Advertisement is a single sheet, folded once, printed front and back. Also advertised are: "WWWVY" 169th Thousand, "WTP" 91st Thousand, and "NWAS"109th Thousand. Leaf in Near Fine condition, the only such example that we have encountered.A.A. Milne would write the Pooh stories after being inspired by his son, Christopher Robin, and his stuffed animals, one of which was a bear named "Winnie." Milne had written prolifically in other modes and genres, but the Pooh books would go on to outshine all his other works. Indeed, "Winnie The Pooh" has been listed on the New York Public Library';s 100 greatest children';s books of the century and the Ashdown Forest, where the stories take place, has become a tourist attraction as a result. "I think Pooh's secret is the kindness and generosity of spirit of the characters toward each other." (Jeanne Lamb, NY Public Library). Bookseller Inventory # 1123
