Photograph
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Album of mainly portraits, with a few views. Entitled London 1916/17. 51 small albumen prints mostly about 7 x 5 cm in size, some a little larger, the vast majority taken within the setting of Censure Anglais offices in London where mail was sifted and read. Mounted mainly two to a page, mostly signed by the subjects beneath. At the front is a view of the undisclosed London location, also an example of the censor's stamp and a heading 'Censore Anglais.' This interesting and rare set of images depicts uniformed staff at work at their desks, some in groups, and a few views outside on off-duty trips around London, including Stanmore Manor at Elstree. This small album, perhaps one of several prepared as personal souvenirs for the staff, provides a unique record of First World War postal censorship, a subject very rarely covered elsewhere.
