Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Publisher's maroon cloth, spine lettered in gilt; dust jacket with illustration by John Rowland. A fine copy with previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown; in an unclipped dust jacket with very slight toning to the spine, light soiling to the rear panel, and a tiny tear to the upper front panel. An excellent, and extremely bright near fine copy. The Worm and the Ring, published in 1961, is set in Banbury Grammar School, the dreary provincial school Anthony Burgess taught at in the early 1950s. The book is structured after Wagner s opera Ring Cycle. The plot follows a teacher in an unhappy marriage, and a young girl s stolen diary which contains depictions of erotic fantasies about the headmaster of the school. The book was pulled from the market shortly after its publication because of a libel lawsuit, making first edition copies very rare. The suit was brought by the school s secretary, Gwendoline Bustin, who had been written into the book as an unmarried gossip who lusted for the headmaster. Bustin s suit was successful, and the revised book was released in 1970.

The binding is tight and the book is free from inscriptions and erasures. Mild bumping to the lower corners. Mild creasing to the lower corner tips of some pages. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. It has mild rubbing to the corners. The pink lettering is only lightly faded to the spine. The spine is only mildly toned with just a little light soiling to the lower spine edge. Small closed tear to the lower front spine fold .There is a mild toning to the edges of the flaps. The condition of the wrapper is far better than usually encountered. An exceptional copy. The John Rowland designed wrapper looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival protector. Accompanied by a loosely inserted bookplate signed by the author. A very SCARCE early key BURGESS title with an interesting history:The novel was withdrawn from circulation following a libel action by Gwendoline Bustin, the secretary of Banbury Grammar School where Burgess taught in the early fifties. Several characters were recognisable as figures from the school, but only Miss Burstin, later Lady Mayoress of Banbury, objected. Heinemann agreed to 'amend all unsold copies of the book' (The Times, October 25, 1962) but actually pulped them. An extremely scarce title to find with such attributes. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
