Book Description: 1848. [two volumes, original wrappers] A Novel. By the Author of "Jane Eyre" [sic]. [In Two Volumes.] New York: Harper & Brothers, 1848. Original light brown printed wrappers. First American Edition of one of the greatest novels of the Nineteenth Century. Emily Bronte's ("Ellis Bell's") WUTHERING HEIGHTS was published in England in December 1847 together with her sister Anne's ("Acton Bell's") AGNES GREY. Although it was their sister Charlotte ("Currer Bell") who was the driving force behind all three sisters' simultaneous effort to publish, it was Charlotte's novel, titled THE PROFESSOR, that was rejected -- but with praise, so that she was encouraged to submit another effort that she would call JANE EYRE (which would wind up getting published a few months earlier, and by a larger publisher, than her two sisters' books).~This first American edition was published in April 1848 simultaneously in wrappers (two volumes at 25 cents each) and in cloth (one volume at 75 cents) -- "both bindings contain the original printed sheets, and copies in either binding constitute the first American edition" [Smith]. It is interesting to note that the American edition indicates that WUTHERING HEIGHTS is "by the author of JANE EYRE" -- which of course it is not (the English edition had instead used Emily's pseudonym, Ellis Bell). Whether Harper truly thought both novels were by the same writer (or were confused by the similar pseudonyms), or whether Harper sought to stimulate the sales of WUTHERING HEIGHTS by intentionally misrepresenting the author, is an intriguing question.~As Smith points out (Note 2), the two-parts issue is unusual in that Part I ends right in the middle of a sentence, and Part II takes up with the rest of that sentence, without so much as a separate title page. (Part II does, however, have its own wrapper, so identified on front wrapper and on spine.) ~In this set, the rear wrapper of Part I is as described by Smith (the only state he observed -- headed "Recent Works of Fiction by Popular Authors" and including JANE EYRE "by the Author of Wuthering Heights"). However, the rear wrapper of Part II is different from both states observed by Smith: where he notes wrappers headed by "Choice Library of Modern Romance" or "Popular Works by Mrs. Marsh," this copy is headed "Valuable and Attractive New Works" and includes Melville's OMOO. ~Condition is very good, considering the fragility of these wrappered volumes. There are nicks and ruffles in the wrappers' edges (plus one closed 3"-tear in a rear wrapper), and there are a few droplet-marks. The spines are askew (as usual for these Harper books in wrappers), and inside, there is minor foxing (again, as usual for this 1840s paper). That said, this is the first time we have EVER had both volumes in original wrappers, in our 30+ years in business (we once had a Part II only): this is truly a rare edition. Now that the English first edition in original binding has surpassed $100,000 in value, this two-volume American edition in wrappers is a highly-desirable alternative at a fraction of the cost. Smith pp 70-74. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell case. Bookseller Inventory # 12383

Book Description: Harper & Brothers, New York, 1848. Wraps. First American Edition. Two octavo (5-1/4" x 7-11/16") volumes in the original printed wrappers. First published in England in December 1847, this American edition was published in April 1848 simultaneously in wrappers (two volumes at 25 cents each) and in cloth (one volume at 75 cents), with copies in cloth much more common than those in wrappers. It was this American edition which led to the "unmasking" of the Brontes. The author is wrongly identified on the covers and the title page as being that of "JANE EYRE," which was also first published in 1847 but was of course by Emily's sister, Charlotte. Harper & Brothers, acting on the assumption of Thomas Newby, the Bronte's British publisher, that the sisters (writing under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell) were, in fact, one person, saw nothing untoward in attributing WUTHERING HEIGHTS to the "author of JANE EYRE." It was to clear up this misunderstanding that the Brontes made their dramatic 1848 visit to their British publishers to reveal their true identity. The various film adaptations of the novel include the classic 1939 version directed by William Wyler and starring Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff and Merle Oberon as Cathy. It was voted best film of the year by the New York Film Critics in preference to the Oscar-garlanded GONE WITH THE WIND. The English Edition of the previous year will set you back an easy 6 figures. Spine and rear cover of the first part in expert facsimile. The second part with expert repairs to the spine and rear cover. Some soiling and foxing to covers and contents. Generally Very Good and exceptionally scarce in the wrappers. Bookseller Inventory # 016971

Book Description: Harper and Brothers, New York, 1848. Hardcover. First American edition. Publisher's brown cloth, decorated and embossed in blind, and decorated and titled in gilt on the spine. Contemporary owner's name of Edwin Troxley Freedley ("E.T. Freedley May 12 / 48"), lacks the rear free endpaper, spine cloth worn down to the text block at the crown, some evidence (albeit small) of repair to the cloth on the spine, some foxing in the text, a good copy. Freedley was a Philadelphia-born author, mostly on business and technological subjects, particularly his important and bestselling *Practical Treatise on Business* (1852). A realistic alternative for collectors seeking the British edition, of which only a handful of copies have been offered in the past three decades, and which costs in excess of $150,000 when found. Book Description: Harper & Brothers,, New York:, 1848. Book Condition: Near Fine. First American edition of this classic of English literature, a work first published in England in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. In an attempt to capitalize on past success, the publisher attributed this novel to the author of JANE EYRE -- Charlotte Bronte writing under her pseudonym Currer Bell -- but it was, of course, written by her sister, Emily. Bound in contemporary three-quarter leather binding with marbled boards. A remarkably clean copy, free from any of the usual staining or darkening to the pages with the exception of only the very mildest aging to the endsheets. Leather edges and corners of the binding have been professionally touched up by Dragonfly Bindery and Studio, making this a near fine to fine copy of the only published work of Emily Bronte, who died December 1848 at the age of thirty. Book Description: New York The Limited Editions Club, 1993. One of 300 Copies, Signed by the Artist BRONTË, Emily. BALTHUS, [artist]. Wuthering Heights. Fifteen Lithographs and an Afterword by Balthus. New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1993. First edition. One of 300 copies signed by Balthus, this being number 249. With fifteen lithographs by Balthus. Folio (16 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches; 410 x 313 mm). Printed on Arches paper. Publisher's full tan leather, lettered in brown on front board. Spine very lightly toned. Housed in full cloth felt-lined clamshell, with leather spine label. About fine. Publisher's newsletter laid in. "But when he made the early drawings for Wuthering Heights back in 1933, he stopped at a point about halfway through the book. As Jean Leymarie has noted, 'Only the artist's interest continued so long as the world of Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw is that if childhood and adolescence. In these drawings Balthus clearly identifies himself with Heathcliff, the willful outsider unamenable to morality and society, in his vengeful satanism and headlong transgressions-an exemplary creation and an undying presence on the absolute level of art and human destiny.' .Unable to forget his early fascination with Wuthering Heights, Balthus agreed to have the entire suite of fifteen drawings presented here for the first time in their destined context, if in a strictly limited edition. He was 25 when he began these remarkable illustrations; today he is 85, happy to behold their fruition, and to write a personal Afterword for the book." (from the LEC newsletter). LEC Bibliography.
