FIRST EDITION, some light foxing, pp. 288, crown 8vo, original tan cloth, lettered in black to upper board and backstrip, the latter a little rubbed with lean to spine, a few faint spots to edges, dustjacket front panel laid down to front pastedown (see below), good. Inscribed by the author, 'Dearest Miriam, I am so happy that you like this book and - the Author, Micky Jacob'. A scarce book, part of the author's saga of the Gollantz family, these novels immensely popular in their day; the manner of preserving the dustjacket design indicates this copy's origin in the author's own library. Born in Ripon, Jacob lived for the latter part of her life on the shores of Lake Garda, in a house known as 'Casa Mickie' a member of the WSPU and the Labour Party, she spent time on the stage and acted in films (including 'The Ringer' with John Gielgud) before her writing career took over. She also published novels under the name Ellington Gray. Her appearance was flamboyantly masculine, and her partners female among the friends gathered in her varied career were Marie Lloyd and Radclyffe Hall, and she appeared for the defence of Hall's novel 'The Well of Loneliness' in 1928.
