Separate Map case with 7 folding maps. Note all four volumes, three text and one map are in matching contemporary full morocco with gilt tooling and raised bands to spine. There is foxing in all volumes and volume one has three uniform cards added to a blank page with dates in ink below, Neat bookplates to Colonel Keeson who purchased the volumes in 1924 (sales details, receipts and interesting handwritten letters/notes from members of the publication committee to Keeson included). All the bindings are in exceptionally nice condition. The most sumptuous and expensive bindings produced for the history and to find all four in matching bindings in at least very good+ condition is very rare. Obviously a very heavy set.

Original small watercolour of "The Fort Kut el Amara from the Brick Kilns " and noting River Tigris etc. Initialled affixed to half title page, believed by Lieut-Col. H.G. Thompson DSO. (Thomson as a Major commanding 2nd Wessex RFA was captured at Kut and like all the Officers survived captivity). Signed Letter from Lady Townsend in the year following her husbands death (1924) to the then Colonel Thomson. Another letter to Thomson from a veteran of the Kut campaign H.Rich describing his retreat to Kut dated 1970. Also Programme of Unveiling of a War Memorial to the 5th Hants Howitzer battery in 1923 by Maj-Gen, C. Townshend. Interesting item faded and on thin parchment ink handwritten details of Thomson service, age (37 ) etc with Arabic script. Wounding details from shell, arm, foot, also details of food and currency (compiled while a POW? of the Turks), also newscuttings. The book and ephemera. See images.
