Set of fifty-five fine prints of Hiroshige's 'Fifty-Three Stages of the Tokaido' in an olive green cloth clam-shell folding box. Possibly 1960s? Includes two booklets, one in Japanese and one in English and two pages of Japanese text in front of prints. Cloth box is sunned, a few marks and scuffs but solid and complete. Gilt titles to front faded. The actual prints are in very good condition, approx. 27cms x 18cms on cream card mount - 32.5 x 23cms. All bright, clean and unmarked, slight crease to bottom left hand corner. Label inside box shows it to be a gift from the Casio Computer Company. Along with Houkasi, Hiroshige was one of the great masters of Japanese landscape print and this series first published in 1833 is his most famous work. The Tokaido Road ran from Edo to Kyoto and along it were 53 post stations providing food and lodging. Hiroshige captured his scenes in different weather and seasons in a stunning collection of woodcut prints. This is a heavy box and our standard postal charges do not apply.
