Letter from author pasted to front free endpaper, presenting copy of book to lady who had lent lace samples illustrated in the book. Some rubbing and bumping to corners, top edge and spine ends but binding solid and tight. Marbled endpapers torn at hinges. Frontispiece to book has plate illustration from Oliver Twist with tissue guard, title page gives both book titles, no vignette. OLIVER TWIST - 311pp, twenty- four plate illustrations. A TALE OF TWO CITIES - 254pp, title page has vignette, frontispiece with plate illustration, 14 further illustrations. Preface is dated 1859. Some foxing to page edges and margins of some of the illustrations but otherwise bright and clean internally. An early edition of two of Dickens most famous novels with lovely illustrations. Fully bound in brown leather with gilt illustration to front, blindstamped decoration to front and back, gilt titles and decoration to spine, five raised bands. 1866, 2nd edition, vii.227pp plus folded plates to back. Leather to edges and spine ends rubbed, corners bumped but binding is tight and solid. Edges of text block gilded. Internally clean, some foxing and tanning to page edges, hinge torn at preface. Sixteen folded illustrative plates bound in back, all complete and in good condition. Prize label pasted to front fixed endpaper dated 1873 from Kings College London. Owners name in ink on free endpaper. Originally presented in the Transactions of the Institute of Engineers in Scotland, this full volume was printed and sold by the author. It describes in detail his work for Messrs Robert Napier and Sons testing the strength or iron plates used in the construction of armour-cased ships. Bookseller Inventory # 004792
