Book Description: SKIRA, 2013. 336 pages. With a forward by Kerry Hill. Texts by Kazi Khaled Ashraf, Philip Goad, Rosa Maria Falvo, and Syed Manzoorul Islam Rafiq Azam is a world-renowned architect, who recently received the LEAF 2012 Residential Building of the Year Award at the London Design Festival. His holistic approach incorporates all the elements of nature, harnessing its beauty and potential in very practical ways. From a uniquely Bangladeshi perspective, his designs reflect the synergies of living environments. Considering the planning conditions of Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital, Azam’s architectural language is quintessential, with traditional courtyards, ghats, and ample internal and external greenery, merging rural typologies in an intensely urban context. Designing exquisite water bodies and natural light rooms with unfolding wall systems, Azam emphasises the subtle interrelationships of ambience, form and function. With more than 300 images, sketches, and aerial views, alongside watercolours and poetry, this exceptionally beautiful and original book offers a unique introduction to a visionary architect and Bangladeshi contemporary living and culture. Rosa Maria Falvo is a writer and curator, specialising in Asian contemporary art and photography. Kerry Hill is an acclaimed Australian architect and influential figure in South East Asia. Kazi Khaled Ashraf is a Bangladeshi historian at the University of Hawaii. Philip Goad is the Deputy Dean of Architecture at the University of Melbourne. Book Description: WILEY-ACADEMY, 2014. 288 pages. Luke Him Sau/Lu Qianshou (1904–1991) is best known internationally and in China as the architect of the iconic Bank of China Headquarters in Shanghai. One of the first Chinese students to be trained at the Architectural Association in London in the late 1920s, Luke’s long, prolific and highly successful career in China and Hong Kong offers unique insights into an extraordinary period of Chinese political turbulence that scuppered the professional prospects and historical recognition of so many of his colleagues. Global interest in China has risen exponentially in recent times, creating an appetite for the country’s history and culture. This book satiates this by providing a highly engaging and visual account of China’s 20th-century architecture through the lens of one of the country’s most distinguished yet overlooked designers. It features over 250 new colour photographs by Edward Denison of Luke’s buildings and original archive material. The book charts Luke’s life and work, commencing with his childhood in colonial Hong Kong and his apprenticeship with a British architectural firm before focusing on his education at the Architectural Association (1927–30). In London, Luke was offered the post of Head of the Architecture Department at the newly established Bank of China, where IM Pei’s father was a senior figure. Luke spent the next seven years in the inimitable city of Shanghai designing buildings all over China for the Bank before the Japanese invasion in 1937 forced him, and countless others, to flee to the proxy wartime capital of Chongqing. In 1945 he returned to Shanghai where he formed a partnership with four other Chinese graduates of UK universities; but civil war (between the Communists and Nationalists) once again caused him and others to uproot in 1949. Initially intent on fleeing with the Nationalists to Taiwan, Luke was almost convinced to stay in Communist China but decided finally to move to Hong Kong. There, for the third time in his life, he had to establish his career all over again. Despite many challenges, he eventually prospered, becoming a pioneer in the design of private residences, schools, hospitals, chapels and public housing. Bookseller Inventory # 978-1-118-44902-8

Book Description: TUSQUETS, 1997. 680 pages. Book Description: AMSTERDAM UNIVERSITY PRESS, 2013. 356 pages. Samuel van Hoogstraten was not only one of Rembrandt's most successful pupils but also a versatile painter in his own right. His experiments in optical illusion also attracted the interest of the natural scientists of his time, and he wrote some of the first Dutch novels, plays, and a treatise on painting. This rich interdisciplinary study examines how van Hoogstraten understood the relationship between art, literature, and science and how these reflected the general views of his time. Bringing to the fore hitherto unknown works, the book is an important contribution to our understanding of van Hoogstraten's life and art. Bookseller Inventory # 978-90-8964-523-4

Book Description: ROUTLEDGE, 2014. 166 pages. In 1935 Jung gave a now famous course of five lectures at the Tavistock Clinic in London. In them he set out in lucid and compelling fashion his theory of the mind and the methods he had used to arrive at his conclusions: dream analysis, word assocation and ‘active imagination.’ Immediately accessible to the general reader, the Tavistock lectures are a superb introduction to anyone coming to Jung’s psychology for the first time. A fascinating feature of the book is the inclsion of the questions posed to Jung at the end of each lecture. The questions, including those from leading psychoanalysts such as Wilfrid Bion, and the discussions that follow offer a superb example of a great thinker at the peak of their powers. Book Description: ARCHETYPE PUBLICATIONS, 2011. Book Condition: NEW. NUEVO. 310 pages. The papers in this volume constitute a substantial body of work that provides a wide-ranging overview of current research on the technology and practice of old master paintings, covering some 700 years of European painting, from the 13th century to the early twentieth century, including works by Guido da Siena, Bellini, Michaelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Gallego, Holbein, Caravaggio, El Greco, Rubens, Murillo, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Whistler, van Gogh and Munch. Six of the contributions focus on technological or historical aspects of specific artists' materials. These papers were presented at a conference held at the National Gallery to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The National Gallery Technical Bulletin which has a tradition of publishing interdisciplinary research which combines scientific investigation of the materials and techniques of paintings with knowledge of their historical context. Such research is therefore directed towards issues that inform art-historical study as well as questions that bear on the material history of a work. Bookseller Inventory # 978-1-904982-63-0

Book Description: ARCHETYPE PUBLICATIONS, 2013. 232 pages. The conservation profession has its roots in the intellectual movements of the first half of the 19th century, following the Enlightenment. Scholarly study of objects made available by important archeological excavations and discoveries gave birth to the first debates on theoretical issues of preservation. Also the political events which disrupted Europe in the first decades of the 19th century played a significant role in conservation practice. In particular, Napoleon’s appropriation of works of art. As much as early conservation treatments can create many problems for conservators today, in some cases, they did prolong the life of an object that might not exist today. In some of these treatments we can see the interest in scientific methods that comprise the foundation of current conservation treatments. Nineteenth century technical inventions brought about by the industrial revolution led to the mass production of many materials. These have had both a positive and negative influence on conservation. Book Description: EDITIONS DE LA MARTINIERE, 2012. 260 pages. Book Description: J. PAUL GETTY MUSEUM, 2008. Book Condition: AS NEW. COMO NUEVO. 384 pages. This volume presents the most noteworthy concepts, artists, and cultural centers of the seventeenth century through a close examination of many of its greatest paintings, sculptures, and buildings. The Baroque, rooted in classicism but with a new emphasis on emotionalism and naturalism, was the leading style of the seventeenth century. The movement exhibited both stylistic complexity and great diversity in its subject matter, from large religious works and history paintings to portraits, landscapes, and scenes of everyday life. Masters of the era included Caravaggio, whose innovations in the dramatic uses of light and shadow influenced many of the century's artists, notably Rembrandt; the sculptor, painter, and architect Bernini, with his combination of technical brilliance and expressiveness; and other familiar names such as Rubens, Poussin, Velázquez, and Vermeer. This was the era of absolute monarchs, including Spain's Habsburgs and Louis XIII and XIV of France, whose artistic patronage helped furnish their opulent palaces. But a new era of commercialism, in which artists increasingly catered to affluent collectors of the professional and merchant classes, also flourished. Bookseller Inventory # 978-0-89236-934-8
