Book Description: Printed and Sold by H. Fenwick, No. 20 Newgate Street, 1776. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. London: Printed and Sold by H. Fenwick, No. 20 Newgate Street, NO DATE but c.1775-77. 12mo. 156pp. With engraved frontispiece depicting Claude Duval robbing Squire Roper in Windsor Forest. §The printer Henry Fenwick operated from various different addresses in the locale from the early 1760s until possibly 1782, including both No. 20 and No. 89 Newgate Street. Maxted identifies him as working from a Cheapside address in 1774-75. He published 'The Lives of Noted Highwaymen', (100pp., 8vo) from a Snow Hill address at around the same period (ESTC tentatively dates it as 1775); this was a reprint of The History of Notorious Highwaymen (London: J. Lever, London Wall, no date but probably 1765-70. Also 100pp.) - both are rare. §The volume offered can be dated with confidence to the late 1770s and is UNRECORDED: No copies held. §A cheap production, on low grade paper stock, with scattered textual browning. A few leaves closely cropped, touching letters at outer margin. §SLIGHTLY DEFECTIVE (see illustrations) with loss to edge of four leaves at edges. Leaves F, L, and N3 have natural paper flaws, resulting in small loss to the lower corner of N3 clear of text; indistinct printing of a few letters to recto of L at upper corner; and (more seriously) a printing flaw to F, with short accompanying tear, where the leaf seems to have been creased during the printing process. D2 has small loss of text to outer margin, which could be a paper flaw but equally the result of a small piece being torn away by a reader. In other respects a very good copy, neatly rebound sometime in the last century in quarter calf, gilt lettering, marbled paper boards. No ownership names or inscriptions. RARE. Book Description: Longman, Brown, Green & Longmans, London, 1854. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. First Edition. London: Longman, Brown, Green & Longmans, 1854. First edition. xi,[i],415,[1]pp. With hand-coloured frontispiece and three etched black and white plates by John Leech. §The author's brother MAURICE BERKELEY's copy with his bold ink signature to front free endpaper. There was bad blood between the disputatious Grantley Berkeley, sportsman & bully, and his siblings. In his 'Memoirs' (1865), he dredged up the dubious circumstances of his mother's 1795 marriage to the Earl of Berkeley - a secret marriage amidst allegations that the Earl had actually bought his bride from her elder sister. Grantley Berkeley's motive appears to have derived from little more than a desire to antagonise his brothers, who responded with a printed denial in the form of the 1866 pamphlet 'Reply to Some Passages in a Book entitled "My Life and Recollections, By the Hon. Grantley F. Berkeley." By the Other Surviving Sons of the Late Earl and Countess of Berkeley' : a pamphlet generally attributed to Maurice Berkeley, only. Nineteenth-century ink ownership name regrettably erased from head of title-page to the point of illegibility; the residue of the name looks of similar date to Maurice Berkeley's signature and may have been that of another family member (this is speculation). Several facetious manuscript comments to text in pencil or blue pencil, and one in ink, in one or more nineteenth-century hands. The annotator(s) clearly read the text with a closely critical eye and one is probably Maurice Berkeley. Rebound in black late nineteenth-century half calf, slightly cropping one of the manuscript annotations (see illustration), pebbled cloth boards (latter a little discoloured), gilt lettering and decoration (title misspelled on spine). Some general light internal soiling and occasional foxing. Loosely inserted is a slip of paper with pencilled note in one of the same hands, mentioning a sporting painting 'The Death of the Fox' depicting Earl Fitzhardinge, the Hon. Craven Berkeley, and others, seemingly left at a framer's. Touch of rubbing to covers and slight external split to 1 cm. of external upper joints, but covers perfectly sturdy. A good, sound copy.
