Item Description: Printed for the Subscribers, Oxford, 1897. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Oxford: Printed for the Subscribers, 1897. First edition. [iv],586pp. Portrait frontispiece. Subscribers' list. §No limitation stated, but one of an edition of one hundred copies only. §Uranian association copy. Front pastedown bears the contemporary bookplate of the Rev. Lancelot Ridley Phelps - fellow of Oriel College, and Vice-Principal of St. Mary Hall, Oxford 1889-1893 - and his ink ownership name appears on recto of front free endpaper, dated 1897 (above that of Roger Mynors, dated 1938, the classical scholar). Loosely inserted is an A.L.S. to Phelps from one J.D.H.(?) (possibly Holland), on Christ Church note-paper. This letter - written in a crabbed hand on one side of a 7.5" x 6" sheet, folded - reads, in part: 'If you look at p. 126. and[?] p. 127 - of Mr. Cory's Letters, you will understand how I value the memory of them for aye. [New paragraph] "Just come to me" [possibly "Lust came to me"] etc refers to pretty Maynard'. Maynard and Holland remain unidentified. The quotation is not to be found on either page 126 or 127, and does not seem to appear in the book. It perhaps originates in one of Cory's poems, but has not been discovered in the various versions of Ionica examined. Phelps 'died, unmarried, at his home, 24 Norham Road, Oxford, on 16 December 1936. As a tutor of the college, Phelps was responsible for the general supervision of one third of its undergraduates, and he was the friend of many more. He talked with them late into the night; he took them on reading parties to High Force, on the Tees; he kept up a lifelong correspondence with many of them", ODNB. Original olive cloth boards, top edge gilt, lately professionally rebacked in black calf with contrasting olive label, gilt lettering and decoration, original green endpapers preserved. A very good copy. Bookseller Inventory # 209244
