Really beautiful books. Page edges all gilt. Gilt lines outline where leather and brown cloth come together. "Over five hundred illustrations with twelve fine (tissued) engravings on steel ." Every thing Tight, clean. Marbled pages all around. Marbled EPs. Calf boards in lovely condition, outlined with double gilt lines both front and back. Black title bar, tan volume bar, spines heavily scrolled with gilt. Large, colored folding map in vol 1 has a tear at side and the middle of the map has a small tear at the fold. No text or printing compromised. Inscription on free EP in vol 1 "on his leaving Eton 1866." One chapter is titled: Are Americans Happy?" which is a fascinating read. The preface, written in Oct., 1859, addresses the turmoil that was happening in England and how it affected the New World. References are also made to difficulties in China and "the never-dying iniquity of negro slavery" and reference and discussion is also given " to the 49th parallel which is declared to be the dividing line between the English and American possessions in those parts, cuts off a small portion of Vancouver's Island, which, as stipulated by the treaty, belongs entirely to Great Britain.".
