Item Description: W. Lindsay & Co. London, 1881. 10 pp. title spotted, disbound, Privately Printed to be circulated among Ashbee's circle of friends, This is a record of two days in the saddle from Tiensin to Peking. In the company of two Americans "the colonel. the dread of all juvenile celestials", the other a doctor who "had tried his hand at almost everything without having achieved fortune or immortality". The journey was of discomfort, however the sight of the walls of Peking he describes as "very imposing, - beautiful certainly not, striking , and unlike what one encounters in Europe. It is the lofty wall of Peking, flanked at regular intervals with large square towers, which fills the approaching traveller with amazement." printed to be circulated among his circle of friends. Henry Spencer Ashbee, 1834â"1900, whose pseudonym "Pisanus Fraxi" is a scatological anagram of latinised Ash Bee, Fraxinus Apis. He was one of the great book collectors of the nineteenth century, particularly in the fields of Erotica and Don Quixote. His bibliophile salons in the Albany were legendary, included Sir Richard Burton, John Camden Hotten, and Richard Monkton Milne. David Chabers his biographer considers that he "was proud to be English, and of the empire, thought little of those outside Europe apart from the Japanese. By religion a lapsed protestant, he had a particular disregard for the Church of Rome and its priests." This little snippet is not prefaced or followed up with any detail of his greater journey round the world in 1881-2. Bookseller Inventory # 13086

Item Description: Possilpark, Glasgow, Walter MacFarlane & Co. [-83], 1882. Sixth Edition, 1-396 + 397-696 pp. map and numerous illustrations. 2 vols. roy.8vo, 11 x 7¾ ins. original green cloth, some wear at head and tail of spines, Walter Macfarlane & Co. flourished between 1850 and 1965. Founded in Glasgow by Walter Macfarlane (1817-85), the firm opened its first premises in 1850, in Saracen Lane, behind the Saracen Head Inn, in the Gallowgate. It flourished greatly during the Victorian era producing everything from Gazebos and Summer Houses, to Wrought Iron Gates, Railings and Urinals. Their work was exported all over the world including the Verandas and Fountain at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, the fountain at the Turf Club in Penang, in India, Tasmania, Argentina and Cyprus. In 1880, Macfarlane's nephew, Walter Macfarlane II (1853-1932) took the firm into the 20th Century and commissioned many of the Glasgow Style architects. An astonishing amount of the firm's architectural crestings, fountains and railings were destroyed after being requisitioned during World War II, as vital material for the war industries and to boost public morale - a scheme which actually resulted in the unnecessary destruction of much of Britain's ornamental street furniture and its being consigned to rot in scrap yards around the country, or dumped at sea. Many more were removed in the 1960's due to high maintainance costs. Bookseller Inventory # 13786

Item Description: Boston, 1870. 69 pp. some edges browned, 8vo, disbound, Sumner forcefully advocated the annexation of Alaska in the Senate, he was against the annexation of the Dominican Republic, then known by the name of its capital, Santo Domingo. Although Sumner forcefully advocated the annexation of Alaska in the Senate, he was against the annexation of the Dominican Republic, then known by the name of its capital, Santo Domingo. After leading Senators to defeat President Ulysses S. Grant's Santo Domingo Treaty in 1870, Sumner broke with Grant, and denounced him in such terms that reconciliation was impossible. In 1871, President Grant and his Secretary of State Hamilton Fish retaliated; through Grant's supporters in the Senate, Sumner was deposed as head of the Foreign Relations Committee. Sumner had become convinced that Grant was a corrupt despot and that the success of Reconstruction policies called for new national leadership. Sumner bitterly opposed Grant's reelection by supporting the Liberal Republican candidate Horace Greeley in 1872 and lost his power inside the Republican Party. Less than two years later, he died in office. Bookseller Inventory # 12946
