Book Description: Abbeville Press, 1983. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Luigi, Serafini (illustrator). First Edition. Over Sized. This is the First American Edition, published in 1983. Hardcover, dust jacket present. "Easily one of the strangest books ever published, THE CODEX SERAPHINIANUS is written entirely in a mysterious and as-of-yet undeciphered language. However, the numerous illustrations provide insights into the flora, fauna, inhabitants, and society of a non-existent world. These fantastic and whimsical drawings show skeletons being reassembled into people, fish that resemble eyes, a man and woman copulating and slowly turning into an alligator, the animals that make up a rainbow, and other wonderfully weird examples of an alien reality. First released in a limited Italian edition in 1981, the book has periodically been published in France, Spain, and the United States. The author, an Italian artist, has never spoken about the origins of the book or the meaning of his language, but theorists surmise that it is inspired by the Borges story "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius" about a book from the (fictional) country of Uqbar that documents every aspect of an imaginary world called Tlön. Borges writes: "The metaphysicians of Tlön are not looking for truth, nor even for an approximation of it; they are after a kind of amazement." Lucky readers who stumble upon Serafini's rare oddity will find themselves confronted with a wealth of amazing nonsense." I credit the publisher for this description. The book has a number of minor flaws: Very light age tonning to the page edges (see photo) a gap in the pages from the location of a book mark ( now removed) some minor signs of shelf wear including rubbing to the dust jacket. Please email for photos to ask specific questions about the books condition. This is quickly becoming one of the most desired books of our time. We were skeptical until we purchased it and read it our selves.now we know why everyone enjoys holding it.however it is still hard to describe it's allure. We ship fast and secure. Over Sized. Book Description: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1916. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. Waugh, Frederick J. (illustrator). First Edition. Oblong. Scarce, Rare Book. Famous American Aritist--Frederick Waugh's children's masterpiece---that has gone undiscovered for generations. The book is 9 1/2" x 12 1/2". Oblong folio, 58 pp. Original blue cloth, front cover pictorially stamped in red and black and lettered in white. Lettering has some fading and hs some repair "white ink" in places that is obvious when looking at the cover. The Pictorial has some scraping on the cover as well. Frontispiece and 7 full-color plates. 20 black and white plates with marginal decorations, illustrations and initials on all text pages. Some wear to extremities, fading to cloth. Interior textblock mildly age toned - but the plates are perfect. No inscriptions, tears, mustiness, smokiness, etc. NOT A REPRINT. NOT EX LIBRARY. Frederick Judd Waugh (1861-1940) was one of America's most renowned painters of the sea. Born in New Jersey, he studied art in Philadelphia and Paris, lived with his wife on the Channel island of Sark for several years, and then settled in the artists' colony of Provincetown at the end of Cape Cod; he spent his final years back in New Jersey. Waugh first visited Monhegan Island, ME around 1911 at the age of 50. In 1914, he was inspired by the twisted fragments of ancient spruce trees on the island and began drawings for his children’s book The Clan of Munes. A friend of Waugh’s, Mrs. Henry Lang, had an extensive Native American collection of artifacts donated to the Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey close to where he lived. This is probably the source for Waugh’s use of Tlingit and Haida Indian totems and dress in the book. "This astonishing and rather disturbing fantasy is clearly based on Northwest Indian myths and art. It tells of the creation by a wizard of a race of bizarre beings who resemble both trees and marine growths, and it is hard to say whether the text or the illustrations are weirder. Whatever else it may be, it is a masterpiece of American illustration." Melrose books described this edition this way: "This book was published in 1916 to critical acclaim as an art book for children - it did not sell well. Although the illustrations were beautiful the story was difficult to read and World War I was looming. Waugh bought back the remaining copies from the publisher and as a result very few copies remain today. On Monhegan Island, Waugh was referred to by other artists as "the Wizard" for how well he could paint the sea. He also referred to himself as "the Wizard's historian" in reference to the Wizard he wrote into the story The Clan of Munes." Email us for photos, we ship fast. Oblong.
