The delight of movie buffs everywhere, lobby cards are one of the more glamorous types of ephemera listed for sale on AbeBooks. Smaller than movie posters, lobby cards were first used in the early 20th century, to generate buzz and excitement about a new motion picture. Most typically glossy 8X10 on heavy card stock (as opposed to posters), these little promotional gems used to be found in the front of movie theaters. Most films released a set of eight lobby cards, to be traded, collected and prized. This often consisted of a title card, similar to a smaller version of the movie poster, and seven scene cards, depicting various memorable scenes from the film. But along with small movie houses, lobby cards began to fade into obscurity, and have rarely been seen in North American theaters since the late 1970s or early 1980s.
Some of the below examples are a literary dream as well, with film souvenirs made from adaptations of books by the likes of Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, John Steinbeck and more. Some are entire sets, while others are just a single lobby card.
