Les Restes De L'Ancienne Rome Publication Date:1709 The Second Edition. The First French Language edition after the First Edition in Latin (1708). This copy once belonging to the Earls of Port Arlington and bears their armorial bookplate to front pastedown; With motto, Vitae Via Virtus; Emo Park Library. Complete as issued with the following collation: Volume 1- Two panoramic frontis', one portrait frontis, one double page map, red and black titles, forty six numbered engravings, index of plates. Volume 2- Red and black titles, fifty numbered engravings, index of plates. Volume 3- Red and black titles, fifty numbered engravings (one double page), index of plates. Three volumes in One. Tall Thick Folio 16" x 21" (406mm x 533mm). Regally bound in full period diced calfskin. Gilt tooled border motifs to front and rear covers. Large elaborate gilt tooled stylized panel in the fleaural design to front and rear covers. Ornate gilt ruled spine compartments with ornate gilt tooled fleural motifs. Raised bands. Gilt title. Van Overbeke's towering opus of ancient Roman architecture was the result of 20 years of inspired work. During this period, Overbeke often visited Rome to measure and draw the architectural remnants of the ancient city's most significant classical structures. Unfinished at the time of his death, the work was completed by his nephew and published with Latin text under the title Reliquiae Antiquae Urbis Romae. This Second Edition was published the following year (1709) with French text. A renowned and unsurpassed collection of stunning plate engravings honoring the glory that was Rome. Some rubbing to spine and covers with some patches of darkening to covers. Portions of backstrip leather of top and bottom spine compartments lacking with under-boards repaired and lacquered. Short starts at bottom of front and rear hinges, however covers are very firm and stable by cords. Short gouge at middle of front hinge. Creasing to front and rear free endsheets (blanks). Usual insignificant tiny chip at edge of first ten pages. An occasional instance of mild, mainly marginal foxing or offset, not affecting plates.
