I have a few books that I want to sell. How can I find out how much they are worth?

Answer:
AbeBooks is a network of booksellers from around the world. We facilitate the sale of books through our Web sites. To evaluate your book, you have the following options:

  • Contact your local bookseller. They will be able to refer you to an appraiser.
  • Search AbeBooks for the same book with a similar description.
  • Contact booksellers on AbeBooks who are selling similar books.
  • If you think your book is valuable first edition, we can recommend "A Pocket Guide to the Identification of First Editions", compiled by Bill McBride has an up-to-date and comprehensive listing of over 3000 publishers and is available from a number of booksellers who list on our web site.
  • Visit your local library and refer to a pricing guide, such as "AB Bookman's Book Price Index" or "Book Prices Current".


I am new to online bookselling. How do I begin?

Answer:
We suggest you start by entering your book inventory into an electronic format. We offer our own signature software, AbeBooks HomeBase, which is designed to work with AbeBooks' system and other online bookstores. Download HomeBase.

If you already have your books in an electronic format (e.g. Microsoft Excel), we can convert your data so you can easily import your inventory into HomeBase. Once you have a number of books entered, described and priced in your database, apply online to be a bookseller on AbeBooks. As soon as your application is processed, you will be able to upload your books and start selling them within 3-5 business days.


What are your fees?

Answer:

Monthly Subscription Rates
For a reasonable monthly subscription fee, (based on the number of books you list), your books will be listed on all of our Web sites.

Note: Once your application has been processed, monthly subscription fees are immediately applicable. The minimum monthly fee of US $25.00 is charged even if you do not have any books online. Review the Subscription Rates.

8% Sales Commission
Upon a successful sale via the AbeBooks shopping basket, a sales commission of 8% will apply to the total item amount, consisting of the book price + shipping + extra charges. The maximum sales commission is US $40.00 per book.


Payment Service Fee
AbeBooks accepts payment for orders placed using Visa and MasterCard. The first $500 of the total item value will be subject to the current fee of 5.5%; the remaining portion of the order will be subject to a reduced fee of 3.5%.

  • Low fee of only 5.5% on the full purchase price.

How do your shipping charges work?

Answer:
Our Shipping Matrix is unique within the bookselling industry and meets the needs of booksellers in the international marketplace. The shipping matrix includes our default shipping rates, speeds and destinations. Once your bookseller application has been processed you will be able to update the matrix at any time to address your unique shipping requirements.

How will buyers be able to purchase my books?

Answer:

You specify the payment methods that you can accept during the registration process, and the information you enter will be displayed to buyers. You can update the information at any time.

We accept payment by Visa and MasterCard. You can also choose to offer additional payment methods like check, money order, PayPal and other credit cards.


How will you pay me?

Answer:

We will pay you by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) in Euros, US Dollars, GBP (Sterling) or Australian Dollars if you reside in the countries where we have those facilities. Otherwise, we will pay you by check in US funds.


I applied to be a bookseller already. Why can't I add a book or upload my book file?

Answer:

We are unable to accept files until your application is processed and your account is set to bookseller status. There are several possible reasons for a delay in processing your application.

We cannot process your application until all of the following information has been provided to us:

  • Banking information for EFT eligible countries;
  • Credit Card for monthly fees;
  • GST or VAT numbers as required; and
  • Merchant Account name for those sellers accepting payment by other credit cards such as American Express or Discover.

When your application is processed, you will receive the AbeBooks Welcome e-mail. If you have not received this e-mail, your application has not yet been processed.
