Buy British and Stretch Your Dollar
With the British pound struggling against the US dollar, it is an excellent time to buy collectible books from the UK’s rare book dealers. The traditional two dollars to one pound exchange rate has been turned on its head enabling a pile of greenbacks to go a long way when you bring a book over the Atlantic. Britain’s finest antiquarian booksellers sell through AbeBooks and their books are just a few clicks away.
Here are six of the best but there are hundreds more:
- Peter Harrington began selling rare books in 1969 and is one of the biggest names in the business. The Peter Harrington shop is on London’s Fulham Road with Peter’s son, Pom, now running the business.
- Adrian Harrington Rare Books has been around since 1971 and you can find the Adrian Harrington bookshop, another remarkable place, on London’s Kensington Church Street.
- Barter Books, located in a Victorian railway station in Alnwick, Northumberland, is another top-class secondhand bookseller that attracts customers from around the globe.
- Stella Books in Tintern, Monmouthshire, and Rose’s Books in Hay-on-Wye, Herefordshire, have formed a bookselling double-team specializing in children’s and illustrated books.
- Bernard Quaritch has been selling rare books since 1847. Quaritch died in 1899 and helped to found the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association - the oldest bookselling organization in the world.
