| May 24 - 30 |
Read chapters 1 through 8 and share your first impressions in the community forums. |
• When John wakes up to find Jean gone and Gaston ready to drive him back to the Château, he decides to play along. Would you have made the same decision? Why do you think he agrees to take on Jean's life?
• Because he has no family, John says he feels like a spectator of life. Jean says he feels life is too demanding because of his family. Which character can you relate to more - John or Jean?
|
| June 1 - 10 |
Read chapters 9 through 17 and join our discussions in the forums. |
• Examine each of Jean's family members and servants. Are you surprised that no one has discovered that their Jean is really someone else?
• The novel is written in the first person point of view from Jean, so we see everything from his eyes and know only what he knows. How would a third-person narrative change the story? Do you wonder what Jean is doing while John is living the Frenchman's life?
|
| June 10 - 20 |
Finish the book. Make sure to join the discussions in the forums if you haven't already! |
• Were you surprised by the ending? Was it believable, and did it fit well with the rest of the story?
• As John lives in Jean's life, we learn more about both characters. John starts out questioning Jean's life, but soon starts examining his own and questions the effects of nature and nurture. What do you learn about John? What does he discover about himself?
