When will Abebooks start processing all Visa and MasterCard transactions?

We'll start processing all MasterCard and Visa transactions in April. We'll send out an amended version of the Bookseller Agreement one month in advance.

Will there be additional fees?

We charge a 5.5% processing fee for orders where we process payment. We are reducing the fee for orders placed on Abebooks.de and Abebooks.fr to 3.5% due to different conditions in these markets.

Booksellers who already use APS will see a reduction in fees for orders placed on Abebooks.de and Abebooks.fr. Booksellers who currently process their own Visa and MasterCard transactions will now be charged the processing fees on their orders.

Abebooks already processed my Visa and MasterCard transactions. How will this affect me?

If you are already taking advantage of APS, there will be no change for you. You can continue to process orders the same way, offer additional payment methods, and pay the same fees.

Can I still offer other payment methods like American Express, PayPal or money orders?

Yes. Booksellers can still extend their optional payment methods to include other credit cards or payment methods. You can adjust these in the Members Menu. [Read Instructions in Online Help]

Do I have to offer MasterCard and Visa as a payment option?

Yes. All books listed on Abebooks are available for purchase by MasterCard and Visa. This is critical for ensuring a consistent buyer experience on our websites.

Will all booksellers, even larger ones, have to use Abebooks Payment Services?

Yes. Every bookseller on Abebooks pays the same commissions and processing fees. No exceptions will be made for any bookseller to process their MasterCard and Visa transaction on our Web sites once we roll in this change in April.

Will Abebooks be adding other credit cards that will be mandatory as well?

We aren't currently planning to make any other credit cards mandatory.

What are the benefits for me?

  • Fraud Protection: If there is a charge-back as the result of a fraudulent order, we'll absorb the cost.
  • Convenience: We'll make weekly deposits into your bank account for your sales, and we'll subtract your fees and subscription from your sales. As long as your sales are higher than your fees, we'll never need to charge your credit card.
  • Time-saving: You can quickly process your orders online and print the shipping manifest without having to process payments and wait for them to go through.

Why is Abebooks making this change?

We're bringing all Visa and MasterCard payments into our systems to provide tighter fraud protection on the websites and simplify the launch of gift certificates and coupons onto the Abebooks marketplace this year. It will also add another revenue stream that will fund marketing and development to sell more of your books.

I've never received a chargeback, so how does fraud protection benefit me?

Even if you haven’t been directly affected by fraud, you will still benefit from better fraud screening and Abebooks always covering the costs and working with affected buyers. There are many different types of online fraud.  The most obvious kind is for a buyer to enter a fraudulent credit card number, as booksellers see these cases when the charge is declined.  Orders can also be placed with stolen credit cards, and these charges often go through.  Not only does the bookseller lose out when they receive a chargeback for these orders, but the person whose credit card was used is likely to avoid Abebooks in the future.

If you're making this change for security reasons, why are you still allowing other payment methods to be accepted and processed by booksellers directly?

The vast majority of purchases made on the Abebooks sites are paid for using Visa and MasterCard, and we will use these payment methods for gift certificates and coupons. We still want to provide our booksellers and our buyers with the options of other payment methods while we make this change.

If APS is required for gift certificates and coupons, why are we still allowed to process payments by other credit cards, check, PayPal, etc.?

Abebooks Payment Services facilitate gift certificates and coupons because they make the process of implementing them simpler. All these transactions will go through these payment methods, providing a consistent buyer experience.

Why are the Abebooks processing fees 5.5% when my credit card processor charges me less?

The 5.5% covers the following:

  • The credit card processing fees we're charged.
  • Administration costs of collecting payments from buyers and passing them on to sellers.
  • Fraud protection for buyers and sellers, and administration costs for fraud tools and processes.
  • A small profit that will be directly applied to growing a stronger marketplace to sell more of your books.

Why is Abebooks charging a different processing fee for orders placed on Abebooks.de and Abebooks.fr?

We're charging a 3.5% processing fee for orders placed on Abebooks.de and Abebooks.fr, and 5.5% for Abebooks.com and Abebooks.co.uk. The different fees reflect different market conditions. You can benefit by listing more of your French and German language books.

Will Abebooks be adding a Billing Address field to the check out?

Yes, we will be adding this field to the shopping basket later this year.

Will Abebooks be requiring the CVV/security code in the check out?

The CVV code will continue to be displayed in the checkout for buyers to add this information. If you require this number to process American Express or other credit cards, please update your Terms of Sale to include these details.

Do I process my orders the same way?

We recommend that all booksellers check their Members Menu at least once a day for new orders. We also send e-mail reminders.

When you have a new order, just click the [Process Your Orders] quicklink next to the Members Menu. If you are going to ship an order, just select [Will Ship] from the options and then you can print the shipping manifest. As soon as you click [Will Ship], we process the buyer’s credit card. If there is a problem with the card, you’ll receive a notice on the next page letting you know whether to try again later. If the charge was successful, you can ship the book right away. The buyer's order page will be updated to say "Shipped" so they know the book is on its way.

An important difference : When Abebooks is processing the credit card, the order will expire if it's not processed after 4 days. If you were processing your own credit cards before, orders were automatically updated to "Availability Confirmed" if they weren't processed. [Learn more about order processing in Online Help]

How can I collect sales tax?

You can use the Request Extra Charges feature when you process your orders to collect sales taxes. We recommend you also add a line about taxes to your Terms of Sale indicating what your policy is. [Read instructions in Help] [Read the Bookseller Policy about taxes]

Can I request extra shipping on my heavy books when Abebooks is processing the credit card payment?

You have the option to increase or decrease shipping amounts when you process an order. If you want to increase the shipping, an e-mail is sent to the buyer and they just come online and accept the change. If you want to reduce the shipping charges, these are accepted right away. Requesting extra charges is done in the same place you process your orders. [Learn more in Help]

N
ow that I'll be using APS, how do returns work?

When a buyer initiates a return on the Abebooks website, we'll send you a notification and you can check the status of the return from the Members Menu. When you receive the book back, just let us know and we'll complete the return. If you still haven't updated the return 21 days after the buyer initiated it, we'll send you an e-mail reminder.

If you have tracking information available for your orders, make sure to add it when you process the order, too. Adding this information prevents returns from being automatically completed for the reason "Item Did Not Arrive." [Read the Bookseller Policies about Returns] [Learn more about Returns in Online Help]

When I complete a return, do I get a refund for my processing fees?

As soon as a return or refunded is completed on the site, we'll credit your account for the commission and processing fees. You can view the individual returns in your Weekly Sales Details, or see the total of refunded fees in your monthly statement.

How will "Item Did Not Arrive" returns be processed? What kind of tracking information do I need?

Buyers are required to wait until 15 days past the estimated delivery date before initiating returns for the reason "Item did not Arrive" in order to allow for reasonable shipping delays. When they select this return reason, our system checks to see if tracking information has been added by the bookseller. If tracking info is available, we ask the buyer to follow up with the bookseller for that information, and the return is cancelled. If no tracking information is available, the return will complete automatically. We encourage all of our booksellers to use tracking information, and to add it to the Web site as soon as possible after the order is processed. [Review the Bookseller Return Policies]

Why does Abebooks pay me once a week?

We make deposits into booksellers' account every week for sales offset by fees. By making weekly payments, bookseller sales payments are able to build up so that fees and returns can be offset without the seller having to owe us a payment. We hope that you'll benefit from weekly payments as we won't need to charge your credit card every month as long as your sales are more than your fees.

Will Abebooks be processing cards through a third-party credit card clearer, or will they be set up with their own account for processing cards?

Abebooks uses third-party services to process credit cards in both North America and Europe.

How can I adjust all of my prices at once?

If you are using HomeBase, you can easily adjust all of your book prices using PricePartner. [Learn more and download PricePartner]
