Mitsumasa Anno

This intriguing and challenging Japanese author and illustrator of children's books celebrates his 78th birthday in March. Born in 1926 in Tsuwano, a small historical city about sixty kilometers from Hiroshima, Anno worked as a primary teacher for ten years before channeling his talents as a writer, illustrator and mathematician into mind-expanding picture books designed to help children learn. For him, mathematics is integral part of the mystery and the beauty of the universe, and he reflects this in intricate watercolour illustrations that delight both adults and children. Most of his books contain little or no text, and the elegant images set against large expanses of white will enchant children with their distinctly Japanese flavour.
