Cold
Mountain - a book by Charles Frazier
Charles
Frazier's Civil War odyssey set in North Carolina's Blue Ridge mountains
interweaves the adventures of Inman, a wounded army deserter trying
to find his way home, with those of Ada, his sweetheart. A city woman
stranded alone on her dead father's useless farm, Ada's life is in as
much danger as her lover's. While Inman's encounters with the monsters
and magicians of the Confederate South play out, Ada forges an unlikely
alliance with a homeless mountain girl whose rough-edged version of
survival turns both of their lives around. Cold Mountain miraculously
offers the beauty, characterization and immaculate language of the best
of modern literary fiction while weaving a story that will envelope
even the most jaded of readers. Frazier won the National Book Award
in 1997 for his debut novel, which was a New York Times bestseller for
45 weeks and has since been adapted into a major motion picture directed
by Anthony Minghella (The English Patient) and slated for release
on Christmas Day. The film version starts Jude Law as Inman,
Nicole Kidman as Ada, and Renee Zellweger as Ruby.
