Successive generations have been spellbound by the exploits of Frodo, Gandalf and their comrades as they journey towards Mordor to do battle with the Dark Lord Sauron. There is something about the alluring world of elves, dwarves and old magic which has proved exceptionally popular, working on the imagination both as an enthralling adventure story and, at a deeper level, as 'a comprehensive counter-myth to the story of the twentieth century.' Collect a set of three, including The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion. Prices from $95.00 - $2,337.47
The magical stories of Hans Christian Andersen are part of the fabric of childhood. 17 of his most famous tales, including The Emperor's New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, The Snow Queen and The Ugly Duckling, are accompanied by enchanting paintings and drawings by W. Heath Robinson.
Compelling, ingenious, disconcerting, bizarre, yet plausible, Roald Dahl's stories take a situation which is familiar and cosy, but quickly reveal startling possibilities, and invariably end with a devilish twist. Whether set in a boarding house in Bath or a New York apartment, on the deck of an ocean liner or inside a car, a macabre black humour pervades each tale. This Folio edition of an omnibus collection first published in 1991, soon after Dahl's death, contains all the stories from his world-famous anthologies, Kiss Kiss, Over to You, Switch Bitch and Someone Like You, as well as eight further tales.
A Midsummer Night's Dream has long been a popular favourite. Among those entranced was the illustrator William Heath Robinson (1872-1944). When commissioned by the publishers Constable and Co. to illustrate a series of gift books, including an edition of A Midsummer Night's Dream, he found himself entirely captivated by the play, and produced some of his finest work. His ambition that his drawings would be a faithful record of 'the most wonderful moonlight night in fantasy' was more than fulfilled. Heath Robinson's exquisite woodland scenes, and delightful depictions of the various characters, all drawn in his distinctive style, perfectly express Shakespeare's wry but gentle humour.
'Go down into the crater of Snĉfells Yocul which the shadow of Scartaris caresses before the calends of July, O audacious traveller, and you will reach the centre of the Earth.' The words of a 16th-century runic cipher inspire Professor Otto Lidenbrock, accompanied by his nephew Axel and guide Hans, to embark upon an incredible adventure. Together, the explorers plunge hundreds of miles below the surface of the Earth, witnessing marvels of nature in lava labyrinths and a huge underground ocean - but the deeper they descend, the more perilous their journey becomes. Jules Verne's classic tale has lost none of its power to enthral.

Mr Toad, Mole, Ratty, Badger - one only has to mention the characters to draw a delighted smile from all who are familiar with this much-loved classic. The stunning illustrations in this edition evoke an idyllic world of river-bank adventures, threatened only by the 'poop-poop' of Toad's new motor car and the frightening denizens of the Wild Wood.
The name of Oscar Wilde has become synonymous with wit. This volume brings together some of the finest and most biting examples - chosen by his grandson from a wide range of essays, stories, plays and poetry - all of them the authentic product of the man who claimed he had nothing to declare but his genius.
The precociously gifted Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was composing music by the age of four. Edward Holmes, 'the best musical critic this nation has ever produced' (Leigh Hunt), based his Life largely on letters and correspondence and he is the only one of Mozart's biographers to have spoken to the composer's friends and family. Christopher Hogwood's introduction for the Folio edition, originally published in 1991, adds information from subsequent discoveries to bring the story up to date.
John Fothergill was the original gentleman-hotelier, whose inn, 'The Spreadeagle' in Oxfordshire, drew an eclectic 1920s crowd - from George Bernard Shaw to H. G. Wells, Rebecca West to Eric Gill. Whether accosting casual users of his lavatories or worrying about adulterous couples, Fothergill was a larger-than-life character, who could veer from sparkling banter to outrageous snobbery in a single breath. Not a day passed without incident, and he recorded them all in a diary full of high jinks, low humour and acerbic wit.
Tumbling headlong down a rabbit-hole, Alice enters the magical underground kingdom of Wonderland. Here, apart from changing size at inconvenient moments, she plays croquet with the Queen of Hearts before stumbling upon the Mad Hatter's tea-party. In her second adventure, through the looking-glass, she finds that life is a game of chess, in which she is the pawn.
