Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography by Andrew Morton

Andrew Morton has a track record of writing controversial biographies and his latest offering - Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography - is no exception. Cruise’s lawyer calls the book a "pack of lies" but such criticism is water off a duck’s back for the British author who has been down this winding road before.

Morton is a former Fleet Street tabloid journalist so he understands, and dissects, the cult of celebrity in all his books. His debut book, Diana: Her True Story thrust him into the public eye after he gained exceptional access to the Princess of Wales and produced a melodramatic but sympathetic book that spilled a lot of Royal beans on the palace floor.

He followed that with Monica’s Story - a biography about "that woman" as former US president Bill Clinton called Monica Lewinsky in the midst of her 15 minutes of fame. Then he turned his attention to Posh and Becks – aka Victoria and David Beckham, Britain’s most famous celebrity couple.

Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography paints a picture of a movie star who is losing his grasp on reality because of his extreme faith. Morton claims Cruise – whose real name is Thomas Cruise Mapother IV - is now No.2 within the Church of Scientology.

It should be noted Morton did not interview Cruise, Katie Holmes, Nicole Kidman or even his first wife Mimi Rogers, or any movie directors that have worked with him as his career progressed from Risky Business to Top Gun to Jerry Mcguire to Mission Impossible.

Aside from describing Cruise’s absolute, 100 per cent commitment to Scientology, the book also examines the actor’s childhood and break-through into acting, and the romances that have made him a tabloid favourite for many years.
