For Immediate Release: January 12, 2004

(Victoria, BC, January 12, 2004), the world's largest online marketplace for used, rare, and out-of-print books, today announced the results of their first annual "Bag of Books" textbook price comparison.

AbeBooks staff compared the prices of ten textbooks used by first year business students at North American colleges and universities. Data was gathered from various online and offline bookstores in North America that offer new and used books.

The results were dramatic: some used textbooks can be purchased for as little as 10% of the cost of new books when purchased online at Here's an excerpt of the results:

  1. Mankiw. Principles of Microeconomics. Thompson Learning, 2nd edition.
Price new*: $53.95 Price on $6.95
  2. Dwyer; Tanner. Business Marketing: Connecting Strategy, Relationships, and Learning. Irwin McGraw-Hill, 2001.
Price new: $129.60 Price on $43.99

The research included five additional books for a total of ten textbooks. The total cost of one "Bag of Books" purchased new was $1,051. The total cost of the same bag of ten books purchased used on was $361. (*US dollar prices collected over three months.)

Nikki Yates from Southern Nevada Community College commented, "The textbooks through my school's online bookstore would have cost me $287. Instead I purchased all my books through AbeBooks for under $70 including shipping! The books were current editions and in great shape."

"I was able to find some out-of-print books and save over $200 by using AbeBooks. Thanks!" commented Patrick Emmett, a graduate student at California State University, Long Beach.
