ABEBOOKS JOINS WITH AMAZON TO PLACE MILLIONS OF SECONDHAND BOOKS
ON AMAZON.CO.UK AND AMAZON.DE
AbeBooks, the world's largest online used book marketplace, makes
inventory available to Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.de customers.
10th October, 2002
(Frankfurt, GERMANY) - AbeBooks today announced at the Frankfurt
Bookfair that they are joining the Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.de
Marketplace programmes.
The initiative involves making the millions of books listed on
AbeBooks' sites available to customers in the UK and Germany through
Amazon's Marketplace program. (Marketplace enables third party
sellers to list inventory on Amazon, and has been active on Amazon's
UK and German sites since March 2002.)
Under the new arrangement, AbeBooks' inventory will be available
to millions of book buyers worldwide on Amazon's e-commerce platform,
significantly expanding the selection of used books available
to Amazon customers.
Commenting on the significance of this announcement, Robin Terrell,
managing director of Amazon.co.uk notes: "Amazon Marketplace
makes finding and buying new and secondhand books easier than
ever. And the added selection of millions of titles from AbeBooks
makes it the ideal destination for customers looking for great
deals."
AbeBooks will offer the option to list books through Amazon Marketplace
to the thousands of booksellers in the UK and Europe who currently
list their secondhand, rare and out-of-print books on AbeBooks'
sites. This new arrangement will bring these books to wider markets
of online bookbuyers. Brent James, chief executive officer of
AbeBooks, explains: "AbeBooks exists to help our booksellers
sell their books. This new option enhances our ability to do that.
We're happy to offer this choice to our booksellers in the UK
and Germany."
This new arrangement expands AbeBooks' relationship with Amazon
in a global direction: AbeBooks first offered this option to its
North American booksellers in August 2002. Booksellers who have
joined the optional programme report increased sales since their
books began appearing on Amazon.com.
