ABEBOOKS.COM PARTNERS WITH BOOKSTORE AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
31st August 2000
(Victoria, BC) - AbeBooks.com today announces new partnerships
with two Victoria bookstores to test market a new online method
of supplying their in-store customers with hard to find out-of-print
books and textbooks. AbeBooks.com (www.abebooks.com) is a Victoria-based
Internet company, providing online customers with over 21 million
books from some 6,500 independent booksellers worldwide.
This September, a world of out-of-print and used
books will be made available to customers at Bolen Books and SUBText
(the used textbook store at the Student Union Building at the
University of Victoria) through two pilot programs with abebooks.com.
The "AbeBookCase" and "TextBookCase" will
provide in-store customers access to books in abebooks.com's database
when they are not available through the stores' regular means.
These programs will change the face of bookstores across Canada,
allowing booksellers to meet their customers' needs faster and
more frequently, ultimately increasing customer satisfaction.
"These programs will raise awareness about
Victoria's local used bookstores, and about the world of out-of-print
and used books in general. Bookstores are able to retain their
customers by fulfilling their book needs while supporting independent
bookstores across the country," said abebooks.com's Director
of Marketing and Business Development, Judy Kam. Many book buyers
aren't yet aware of the availability of these books, Kam said.
The programs also blaze a new path for Canada's
e-commerce industry. At Bolen Books, the AbeBookCase will provide
the next step for securing a desired book when it's not available
in the store. Bookstore employees will search the virtual shelves
of abebooks.com's member bookstores across the city or the nation.
A similar program, the TextBookCase at SUBText,
the University of Victoria's used bookstore, provides students
with access to lower priced books, references and used textbooks
to fulfill their studies. Summer McFadyen, UVic's Students' Society
Chairperson indicates: "The Society is very excited about
the opportunity this presents for UVic students to buy some of
their textbooks at considerable cost savings from used bookstores
across Canada."
Both pilot programs will be launched in early September
and completed in October. AbeBooks.com will install BookCases
in bookstores and Universities worldwide, beginning this November.
