CHRISLANDS - AN ONLINE BOOKSTORE PROVIDER - ACQUIRED BY ABEBOOKS.COM
(Victoria, BC – 9 April 2008) AbeBooks.com extended its family of companies with today’s acquisition of Chrislands – a business that builds, hosts and maintains online bookstores.
Co-founded in 2001 by Lance Christen and Jaymes Sorbel, Chrislands provides an affordable solution for operating an online bookstore. Based in Burke, Virginia, Chrislands currently hosts more than 1,000 online bookstores. The terms of the acquisition are not being disclosed. AbeBooks.com - located in Victoria, BC - is the world’s largest online marketplace for new, used, rare and out-of-print books with more than 110 million books for sale from thousands of booksellers.
Online stores hosted by Chrislands boast complete ecommerce functionality including a full inventory search, shopping cart, and secure order processing. Chrislands builds search engine-friendly stores with inventory uploaded to Google. Each site has administration tools that allows users to easily maintain and update the store without specialized computer knowledge.
Chrislands will continue to operate as an independent business but will receive access to AbeBooks’ expertise and resources. For example, stores hosted by Chrislands will soon have the capability of including their inventory in BookFinder.com search results. BookFinder.com, owned by AbeBooks, is the leading book price comparison search engine.
“Chrislands is a perfect fit for us - it’s a book-related ecommerce business that is thriving,” said Hannes Blum, CEO and president of AbeBooks.com. “Lance and Jaymes understand booksellers and the demands of online retailing – we’re thrilled about working together.”
Lance Christen, co-founder of Chrislands, said: “Our customers will feel the benefit of this deal very quickly. Ultimately, we’ll be able to offer a better product by working closely with AbeBooks.com and its affiliated companies. We’re very excited about the future.”
The majority of Chrislands’ customers are used booksellers in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia but the company also serves booksellers in other countries. Chrislands charges a set-up fee of (USD) $199 and then a monthly fee starting at $19.99 per month.
Chrislands’ sites are compatible with any book inventory management program that supports online bookselling, including FillZ – the online book inventory and order management service and HomeBase, the free inventory management software offered by AbeBooks.
This is AbeBooks’ fourth acquisition in the past four years. In 2004, IberLibro.com, a Spanish online marketplace for used and rare books, was purchased. AbeBooks acquired BookFinder.com in 2005 and FillZ in 2006.
