BUYERS SCRAMBLE FOR ORIGINAL EDITIONS OF ‘THE HIGHFIELD MOLE’ – THE NEXT HARRY POTTER

(Victoria, BC – 14 June 2007) An almost unknown self-published book, called The Highfield Mole, has become one of the most sought-after titles on the rare book market after being heralded as the next Harry Potter.

Originally published in March 2005, The Highfield Mole, co-authored by British writers Roderick Jordon and Brian Williams, is set to be re-published in the UK by Chicken House, a division of Scholastic, on July 3 with a new title – Tunnels.

Literary talent-spotter Barry Cunningham, who signed JK Rowling to Bloomsbury, was responsible for bringing Jordon and Williams to Chicken House – hence the prediction that Tunnels is the next big thing in publishing.

AbeBooks.com - the world’s largest online marketplace for new, used, rare and out-of-print books - has sold three hardcover copies of The Highfield Mole at $1,190 and another copy for $1,440 in the past 48 hours. Prices for the handful of copies for sale on the site range from (US) $193 for a paperback to $5,000 for a signed ‘Remarque’ edition hardcover.

“If Tunnels does indeed become the next Potter-style publishing sensation, then the value of these limited edition self-published books will soar,” said Richard Davies of AbeBooks.com. “Remember, the first editions of JK Rowling’s debut novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, are now worth between $40,000 and $66,000.”

There were only 500 hardcover and 200 paperback copies produced of The Highfield Mole. Stocked by Gordon’s local bookshop in Norfolk, UK, the book sold out in a single day following a review in the May 2005 issue of Book & Magazine Collector.

Prices for The Highfield Mole at AbeBooks.com have been steadily rising and the forthcoming release of Tunnels will probably drive prices even higher.

According to the authors’ website, The Highfield Mole is “a story of discovery and adventure in which Will Burrows embarks on a quest to find his father, an archaeologist, who has inexplicably disappeared. Will’s investigations lead to a deadly conflict with the sinister forces that have abducted his father, and a dark and tyrannical world from which he may never return.”
