EARLY BIRDS CATCH BEST TEXTBOOK BARGAINS AS ONLINE PRICES FALL

( Victoria, BC - 12 December 2006) Price-conscious students who go online this month to buy their textbooks for the spring semester will find better bargains than scholars who delay until January, according to AbeBooks.com – the world’s largest online marketplace for new and used books.

Although list prices for many new textbooks have again increased since August, new and used books found on the Internet offer huge value for money thanks to falling prices caused by fierce competition among Web-based textbook sellers.

Early birds can even find used copies of popular latest edition textbooks for under $5. However, these books are in great demand and online supplies fall sharply as more and more students return to school.

More good news for online buyers is that textbook prices on AbeBooks.com continue to fall with each back-to-school season. When comparing pricing for 10 popular textbooks between August and December, the best prices for used copies had fallen for six of them – by more than 50 per cent in three cases.

Meanwhile, the list prices for eight of the same 10 books had increased over the same period of five months. One book had risen more than $20 – Options, Futures and Other Derivatives by John Hull rose from $156 to $177.

“If you’re looking for textbooks, it pays to buy as early as possible because used copies sell quickly,” said Lisa Stevens, VP of marketing at AbeBooks.com. “Overall, intense competition among online booksellers is driving down prices and that’s going to continue in 2007.”
